Started my probation. Need help!

Published

I really need help, its so stressful, i just started my 3 yrs probation due to 2 narcotic wasting errors in my old job. Ca brn applied the first 1-13 restriction conditions on my license and i never did drugs in my life, never had dui, never did any crime in life, never smoked. I told my hospital which is my current job about the restrictions and they sent me to paid leave and told me to resign last week or otherwise they will terminate me and they also put me in a non hireable status which really sucks, Me here now looking for a new job. Are there any nurses whos been in my position who got the first 1-13 conditions? Im from sacramento area, any recommendations that you guys know where i can get a job and where should i apply coz i already got denied by 3 facilities, i really dont know what to do know i felt like ive been treated as a person who is diverting meds at work...

How did you end up with narcotic wasting error? Nobody witnessed that?

Nobody. I didnt witness it with another nurse, i discarded the half myself and gave the half which was the actual order to the patient.

This is a little shocking...are you a new nurse? But even if you are new, witness narcotics is something fresh out school nurses would know. How could you not have some witness the waste? And on 2 counts? You have to have a better explanation for people to believe you are not diversing drugs at work. I'm not sure what system you are using. Some nursing homes I worked use paperwork. I had to ask a nurse to witness discarding the meds in the waste meds bottle. Hospital I'm working at uses Pyxis, which would require another nurse put in their credential to witness the waste. How did you end up with two unwitnessed narc wastes? After the first one, paper system would be audited by shift supervisor. Pyxis woll remind you that uou have an unwitnessed waste....unless you have two counts happen dyring the same shift.

Ive used pyxis and pyxis is safer and easier coz it notifies you right away, i made a mistake in omnicell we used omnicell in that hosp. I admit i was busy that shift but i know its not a good reason so im kind of stuck now. Just looking for a job with my restrictions on my license

I'm sorry you get stuck in this situation. Now you learned your lesson. Just remember, patients are not going to die without pain meds, but you are going to suffer from not wanting them to wait and missed witnessed waste step.

I think what you can do now is that try to go with those places that are desperate for staffing, extremely short of staff, some nursing homes, night shifts, weekend shifts. When you have interview, bring it up front during the interview, do not wait till they check your references. In this way, at least you would have a chance to explain yourself. If you can relocate, try rural area. Just have to sacrifice something to pass this probation time.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, yea i think thats the only way ill be able to fix my license im on my way to get a truck license too as a back up plan.

The place I work at now is like a nightmare that never ends. It would save me precious time by just wasting the stupid Ativan that one of the many psych patients spit out by not having to walk all the way down the hallway to witness the wasting, but treat narcotics like TNT. Your life depends on not making any errors. That is how I approach them. And the employers are sadistic. One mark against you and you may as well kiss your career goodbye. Now that everybody and their aunt, uncle, cousin, brother, and sister are flocking into the field, they can afford to be picky and love to put you on the computer as a do not hire black list. I refuse to belly up to anyone, I have a Master's degree in an unrelated field and between 12 years of college and some 50 years of almost continuous self learning and reading, I am way more intelligent and educated than the knuckleheads with double digit IQs that are theoretically in charge of me, and they know it. I made a few hit lists in my 20 plus years doing this, but with inevitable medicare cuts (there will be no funds for our safety nets after we squandered 700 billion tax payer dollars on a wasteful, bloated, and totally unnecessary military budget) these for profit nursing homes will belly up, as some of the bigger ones are going under now and I am rotten glad to see them fail. So that blacklist they think is cute now will wane in the future as the government steals our medicare and social security to fund the military industrial complex that controls them. In the meantime, see if you can appeal that mark against you. I presume they drug tested you, and if you passed, they could have given you probation or made you attend some classes. Try home care. It is a breath of fresh air from these hospitals and insane asylums they call nursing homes. The names they give these places slay me...the Manor of Eden or the Gateway to paradise to mask the horrors that routinely occur in these places. They have a sick sense of humor, these owners. I hate them, but they can be amusing at times. Many home care companies will hire you on the spot, or will lend a sympathetic ear if you tell them what happened. I did that for 12 years, never had to pass a narcotic to anyone, so that might be an option and it is way less stressful then hospital or nursing home work.

So does it mean home health care companies can hire nurses with probation restrictions? They did test me one time when they interviewed me but it was negative and they also asked me to attend the rehab and all that but i denied because i never did drugs or became alcoholic in my life even once and i still ended up with a 3 yr probation with 1-13 restrictions on my license. I was forced to resign in my job last week coz they said they cant accommodate the restrictions on my license.

Hey I understand what your going through. Does this 1-13 restriction stay on your license forever? And you can try nursing positions that do not require you to be around narcotics "this is what the hospital or nursing home would be worried about". So try insurance company's, Law Firms Divita, Philips electronics they pay well and you only educate on the bedside monitors, Baby wranglers( nurse on set of a movie for the baby) DO NOT give up!!!!! ?

I recommend you try home health care, smaller agencies may be less strict, but most of those not affiliated with a hospital may not have affordable medical / dental coverage , and probably no pension or retirement benefits. However , you will have income coming in . Sorry to hear this , but it happens more often than you think .
