New to the LTC staff education department (LOL). I am the department (scary, I know). Anyway, I want to do my job effectively and make it exciting. I need ideas. My administrator is wanting me to do inservices with some of our suppliers, but right now I'm blank about any that aren't required. I need them for CNA's for sure, but am not against those for all staff. Right now, I have: abuse and neglect, disaster preparedness, fire prevention, resident rights, infection control. I'm open for any and all ideas.
I'm thinking prevention of skin tears, bruising; lifts and transfers, incont. care, oral care, lifts and transfers, cognitively impaired resident. Any others?

*** Check your past surveys to see if there are specific areas of concern that need your fast attention. Know when your survey is due.
Figure out what your 'mandatories' are and try to get started,
***CPR & AED - various approaches to handle this one. A local fire squad/rescue service might be a resource.
Don't feel like you have to do it all yourself. Use your dept heads. If you're corporate, you might touch base with them. And I also came to know the other SDCs in my community.
The Social Worker usually does Resident Rights in places where I've been.he
HIPAA (maybe your Medical Records person/consultant). I think facilities have an appointed HIPAA coordinator.
Your wound care supplies providers like to do inservice and some even give a CEU certificate at times. If you use a wound nurse, that will help also.
You probably have a contract already with a Fire Prevention Services provider. They conduct the fire drills and discuss the RACE & PASS.
Maint can help with the MSDS.
Pharmacist Pharmacist Pharmacist!!!!! The consultant freq does mock med passes and is good for stuff like psychoactive drugs. And s/he usually does a very much eye opening presentation re narcotics count LIABILITY.
Therapy can do body mechanics, but if they do inservice on a transfer board or splints, write it up for credit.
Consultants usually have contracts with the facility and those contracts usually have some clause that they'll provide some education programs. Even your MEDICAL DIRECTOR may have that clause. Think hospice, DIETICIAN, psychologist, etc
Make sure your staff's IV certifications are in line with the BON's rules & regs. Your Pharmacy provider may conduct certifying/recert classes and you can start to schedule in your staff too.
Utilize your nsg shift supervisors for presentations if you can but not to overload them with your job.
The toughest thing I found with the position was coordinating time with staff availability esp with other presenters. It has become so difficult to pull staff together because of all the daily time constraints, so flexibility & thinking outside-the-box helps.
Programs to review CNA documentation for I&O, meal completion, turning schedules, B&B.
Check out your weight measurement program and consider inservice for bed scales or other scales.
I really loved the position. And I loved new/newbie nurse orientation BEST-EST. Can you tell?!?!

I could use some help with this too. I am pretty new to my position as well. I used to be one of those staff members that didn't show up for meetings. What gets their attention and keeps it. Need fun and exciting ways to educate staff. Help please..
I'm still fairly new at this but something that we've started is for every in-service you go to you get a ticket and your name is put into a drawing at the end of the month if your name is drawn we only draw one ticket if your name is drawn then you get a $20 gift certificate to a salon or the movie theater or restaurant or the grocery store whatever you want it's just a little extra incentive It's not in your budget to get a whole lot but we do have a staff morale fund I'm not real sure what it's called and I'm taking the money from it to use also I did the Jeopardy and my ABO in-service and just based upon what are you supposed to do with the brush and comb after you're done brushing hair you know the answer was in I'll clean it and put it away what are you drapery on the back of their neck their shoulders if they're able to sit up or in the back of the pillow and that's a towel it just gets them thinking about what they're supposed to be doing
i'd be glad to use any of your ideas if you have any you want to share
We had pretty good luck so far the staff replied they really like the Jeopardy is that it's a lot of fun pretty competitive in the winner of the Jeopardy got to get their extra ticket in the pot for winning we had to break it up in teams we had nine players but we had groups of three so it worked out anyway stop really like that and they really talked about that afterwards food always gets him to cut them and doing incentive program a lot of them are very competitive about that because they don't make Much anyway

I've had some success with Surveymonkey. They are a free service you can use for surveys. Create a short, simple survey on what your staff want to learn, then follow up with a lot of face to face requests. This is only one avenue to use, but you can learn a lot by just asking. Good luck.
