Staff Development - Need Help

Good Morning All,

I am new to LTC as a Staff Development Coordinator and have to basically start from scratch with the development and implementation of an education program here at my facility. My previous position was DON at a facility and I have administration, management, and staff experience, also working in staff education at an acute care hospital.

I am wondering if anyone can help me out/point me in the right direction of a good place to start. In particular, so that I don't have to re-create the wheel, I am looking for powerpoints/education on the 12 mandatories (I'm in CT). I would appreciate ANY and ALL advice you are willing to provide.

    A couple of suggestions:

    1. Join ANPD (Association for Nurses in Professional Development). At least check out their website. You need to learn how to do NPD ... assess educational needs, plan programs, evaluate programs, etc. They have learning materials that might help you a lot in the long term -- thought probably not the short-term fix you are looking for now.

    2. Make contact with other NPD practitioners in your area. See what they are doing. See if you can find a mentor. etc.

    Start with finding out the requirements for your state and any accrediting agencies and secure materials to meet those requirements. Be sure your boss understands those requirements and the investment it will take for you to meet them all. You won't be able to do your job if the administration is not willing to invest in the resources it will take to do it right.

    Does your facility have any on line training options? It's the latest thing around here. All the mandatories are on the computer - personally I think the courses have all been dumbed down but it's the way things are going.

    Contact your vendors. I'm sure some of them would like to come in and do teaching in their area.

    Good luck. Being an SDC was my favorite job.
