Has anyone taken Microbiology Lecture online at St. Pete College? I was just wondering how it went because I would really like to do it since I work full time & I will also be in AP II. I heard Citron was a good professor to take online. I am definitely planning on taking the lab in class as I think online would be extremely difficult.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Mic

Hello!
I actually took both Micro lecture and lab online at SPC. I had Dr.Crespo for both. If you have another option, DON'T TAKE HER! She takes forever to respond to emails and her quizzes were confusing. However, I still ended up with an "A" in lecture and a "B" in lab. I probably could have got an "A" in lab as well but I started slacking.
I actually have her again this semester for Human Nutrition which is also online (she was the only professor teaching it.) She isn't as bad so maybe she has gotten her stuff together since I took Micro with her. If you don't have another option, take her class. I got an "A" so I know you could too. Good luck!

Been there, done that. I also took both lecture and lab online. Although I got A's in both, I wouldn't recommend lab online. My class was "special" because our class revolted and got the professor fired 6 weeks into the semester. (Long story) The class was started over at an accellerated pace with Dr. Crespo taking it over. What a nightmare she inherited.
Anyway, lecture is doable.
Thank you so much for replying. I am always greatful to get the scoop on the professors. They can definitely make or break your grade & understanding of the material. If I could take my AP professors for every subject from now until I graduate from Nursing School I definitely would.
I was thinking that I would take lecture online and take the lab as a lecture but someone told me that I if you take lecture online than lab has to be online too. I really do not want to take the lab online so I will have to find out if thats true.
I found out from my advisor that I can take Micro over the summer though which I guess is good news. Although I am not looking forward to an accelerated summer micro class I was not looking forward to taking Micro & AP II together either. I figure taking it alone over the summer is the lesser of the two evils.
Land64shark, Sorry you had that trouble but at least they didn't make you wait until the next semester......what a nightmare!!!
Thank you both again for the enouragement. And good luck to you!

I haven't taken micro, but I am currently taking Pathophysiology online at St. Pete and I am going to drop it after two weeks in. The course work is unbelievable - I'm spending 20 hrs/week and not even getting halfway through the work. With 2 additional projects added on over the next few weeks I don't know how I could possibly get it all accomplished. This is my first online course and I'm really discouraged - are all courses this intense? (7 chapters per week of really heavy stuff)

Hi Hospicenurse,
Is the Pathophysiology course that you are taking an "Express" class? I know you said you are only two weeks into it which makes me think it is an express class (or some sort of condensed class) as the regular semester started at the end of August.
If that's the case, yes express classes are very challenging (especially something like Pathophysiology.) The reason being a whole semester worth of material crunched into a smaller amount of time. But I don't think all online classes are like that. I've really enjoyed my online classes at SPC (with a couple exceptions) and have taken a lot of them. I'm currently taking Human Nutrition and Sociology which are both online. I've worked ahead and have almost all my work done for the semester. I guess that's what I like most about them. The flexibilty is great.
So don't be discouraged about Pathophysiology and try another online class. Make sure it is a regular class (not express or 8 week) and I'm sure you'll do great. It just takes some getting used to. Good luck!

I had Citron for Micro lecture and lab and she was awesome! I would highly recommend her. Not to say that the class is easy but it is definitely something that is doable online. For the lab, you do experiments with ingredients from home. I think I had everything on hand except the yeast for one of the experiments. Citron allows open book quizzes and is great about answering emails. Micro is a difficult class and is not easy material to learn. Good luck to you!
Thanks so much Livsmom13 Its so great to hear from someone who's been there, done that. I am actually in the online right now for the summer & I am very nervous. Because its the summer we have one, sometimes 2 quizzes every week- 2 seems a little much for the amount of material. I was actually thinking of switching to lecture in class (Dr. Menard) only because I am concerned the questions come from a question bank. A computer randomly selecting questions seems a lot more difficult to me. I am on the fence......... (I have lab in class & lecture online so I just need to make up my mind by tomorrow about the lecture).
Should I be worried?????? I have all the pros & cons in my head, just need to make up my mind.
I though I might try to take quiz 1 tonight since I have already studied the material and see how that goes.

It would be daunting to take Micro in the summer because of the shortened session. Good idea taking the first quiz to see how you do. I took it during the fall session last year so I had more time. I had considered taking it the summer before and am still unsure about how I would have done, even with Citron. I will say that I was very scared in the first couple of weeks of Micro, both for lecture and lab but like every other online class, once you find your groove and set aside the days you are going to study, etc, it ends up being not as bad as you originally thought. Something to think about. I wish you luck either way!! When it is over, you will look back and say what was I worried about?
Thanks so much for the confidence. I am finishing up studying chapter 1 right now. I PM'ed you too. I had an issue w/ my computer for a minute & thought this didn't post....but it did. Guess either way I do it will be tough. Are you in your program??
I actually start this August, I cannot wait. I had put off Micro to the very end and because I did not take it last summer, I did not get in to January's class. So had to wait another 8 months but that is ok. Good things come to those who wait, right? When are you hoping to get in? I know they recently changed some of the criteria to get in.

I just took Dr. Citron for Micro online, and it was easy as far as studying goes (compared to med-surg nursing). The questions were really difficult though since she knows you can look at your book. I am in the college of nursing, and micro is harder than the first semester fundamentals. However, make sure that you know your fluid & electrolytes, cardio, and oxygenation by the time you get to med-surg.
About the program: If you are only taking micro this semester, you should be fine. I don't want to sound mean, but if you can't handle it, you won't be able to handle the nursing program. Your first semester they make you buy about 18 books, which 5-7 of them you will use. Your main book is fundamentals of nursing 1800 pages, but most chapters are easy to read at least. The med-surg book is much harder, you will use this more in the semesters that follow. You have a care plan that is due at the end of the semester 35-40 pages. Oh and an 84 is a "C", and 79-below is failing. It is not easy, and that is why they make you take micro first to see if you can handle it. On a positive note, it is amazing how much you will learn in one semester. Good luck with micro and getting in. If pay attention, you will do fine. If you have any questions, I will try to answer them.
