Hello, I am a current pre-nursing student at St. Kate's Saint Paul campus. I am really worried about getting into their program, if I can even get in.
I am a transfer student, I transferred from MCTC and also took a class at Normandale. I decided that that route was too much for me because I did not get much help at community college, plus all that work just for a AS? But now I feel like I could go back and get into their Nursing program. But I don't want to regret possibly earning a spot in St. Kates Nursing. My gpa is low, pre-req gpa is currently 2.7 and my classes right now I have 2 C+ and one A. I fear that I will not get into St. Kate's Nursing and will have to continue taking classes. I don't want to be in HUGH debt when I'm out. All this is really making me debate on if I want to do nursing because I doubt my abilities.
Should I continue at St. Kates even though my grades are only average? Or transfer back to community college and earn a AS then go for a Bachelors? One thing that sways my decision to going back to community college is the $ and I want to get my medical assistant license which would only take me a summer and a year if I get accepted so that I can work as a Medical Assistant instead of a CNA while in nursing school.
Honest opinions please!

I'm also a pre-nursing student (I have 2 semesters left before I apply to nursing school). These days, most nursing programs are pretty competitive...both community colleges and universities. So having a high GPA is always a plus because it puts you ahead of the game. But you have to remember that when you do your application, there is also a personal statement or essay you write. That is where you can really show them that you deserve to be admitted to the nursing school in which you are apply to. I'm not sure how far along you are with your prerequisites...but there is still time left in this semester to buckle down and turn those C's into B's (and if you really try hard...maybe A's). With what ever courses you have left to complete before nursing school, try as hard as you would if those classes were nursing classes and get your GPA as high as possible. As for which program to apply to...it never hurts to try :) Apply to both!
Thanks so much for replying.. I seriously just had a nervous break down with all this stress. I guess I just really need to be more dedicated and motivated!! Good luck to you as well!!

I am a nursing student at the U of MN and their nursing program is competitive too. Over 500 apply and 100 get in. The average gpa was 3.7 - If St Kate's is anything like the U, then I wouldn't waste my time applying unless St.Kate's look at other things...like previous medical background, volunteer experiences. However, I think you should apply to both schools, so you won't regret it later. If you don't get in then maybe retake some courses and apply again, I think a bachelors degree is better than an AS in your situation since both routes takes the same amount of time. Also, why not apply to the U? (it's a three year program though - but I think you can get in easily with your background) GOOD LUCK!!!
