I am currently in LPN, getting pinned on the 20th of this month and have been accepted into RN in August. I am looking for a place to plant myself for the rest of my life and build a careeer. Does anyone on here work at St. Jude's? Would it be worth moving my family from Missouri to TN in order to work there? I want to work there for the satisfaction of working somewhere where I can make a difference, but I also need to make sure my family will be financially secure in the process. I want to work there in order to be involved in research and helping our future generations. So, does anyone on here work there, and if you do, what is your satisfaction with them as your employer and what are the advantages and disadvantages of working there?

I don't work there, but I know someone who does as a student nurse. Apparently, they have low n/p ratios and it's a good place to work. I toured it and it did seem really nice.
sorry I couldn't be more help.

I have some info on it. You are right, n/p ratios on the regular floor are 1/4 or less, on ICUSD, ICU, and transplant, its more like 1/1-2 and sometimes 2/1 depending on the acuity. They are very sick little children. People who work there generally seem very happy and pay is comparable to other area hospitals, HOWEVER, I've heard that its hard to get a patient care position. They do have clinical research positions available, I believe.
Oh, and as far as moving from MO to here, I don't know, depends on where you work in MO. I've heard southern MO outside of St. Louis gets paid next to nothing, so then yes, it would be worth it financially for sure.

I have lived near the Memphis area, and though I don't know much about St. Jude, I would not want to raise a family in Memphis.
True. Best to do lots of research in the suburbs, stay far away from Memphis Metro.

I live in Memphis. I agree, it's not the place to raise a family.
This is totally off topic, and do totally agree that Memphis is not Disneyland or anything, but it's the avoidance attitude that keeps a place like Memphis from ever growing.
Running and avoiding the problem does not fix things. I'd elaborate, but I think I've already taken this thread way off topic.
So, if Memphis is not a place to raise a family, are there small towns around within 30-60 miles that would be good to raise a family in? I live about 45 minutes away from Kansas City, and I would never raise a family there either, but I am willing to travel there everyday should we decide not to relocate. I had three surgeries in one year about 2 years ago and we lost everything, our house, car, and two businesses because I ran them both, so we look at this as our opportunity to begin a fresh and new life.
By the way, thanks for all of the replies.
There are area's within Memphis that are just fine to raise kids. Memphis has a lot of really great musuems, parks, theaters, and activities to take kids to. Yes, there is crime, but where is there NOT crime?
I'm not afraid to let my kids go outside and play if that makes you feel better. Of course, there are neighborhoods I wouldn't want to drive through at night either.
PM me and I'll tell you more.
Memphis has a lot of history and to me is a pretty good place if you know where to look.
To answer OP's question, yes there are suburbs outside of Memphis that are worth looking into, Olive branch MS is one, Lakeland TN, Atoka TN (these are further out). As far as crime, yes every where has crime but for some reason, Memphis is just getting more and more violent crimes. Like sexual assault, I think we either had the biggest increase or just the biggest number of sexual assualts per capita, something like that. Murders are also way more than the usual number by this time of year. There's some merit to not running and hiding, but until we get better administration (i.e. a competent mayor) then things aren't going to get better, will probably get worse. OP deserves to know what is really going on. People are running out in droves.
So to sum up, St. Jude is really a good place to work, and Memphis is not good to live in but if you can compromise and commute then it will be ok.
I moved from Mississippi to Tennessee and have some thoughts on living in the suburbs. Olive Branch is a very nice place to live, but consider the differences in states when choosing where to live. TN does not require you to pay state taxes, but MS does. Also, I drive a modest mid-line SUV and my license plate in small town MS cost me almost $500, while here in TN I pay the standard $35. These are greats perks I learned about after my "transplant".
