Specialties Emergency

Hi, I'm considering the ER when I get my license for an RN, i'd like some input. =) Is this a good idea or is it better for Med Surg then transfer? how long should I be med surg for to get enough experience?

I am another one that went straight from graduation to the ED as in graduated on Friday and in the ER on Monday. I never left ER night shift until I had to due to latex allergy onset. If you know you want ER than just go for it. We had many nurses that wanted to change from Med/Surg to the ER and not one of them stayed in our department. Most complained that the pace was too fast and had a harder time with our clinical pathways that allowed us to start treatment without the Doc seeing the patient first.

Jump in and just swim.

I also agree on shadowing if you can. Are you still in school? Is the ER an option for your senior practicum? That will also help determine if the ER is for you but if you have your heart set, then go for it! You don't necessarily need to have med-surg experience first to work in the ER. I would look for an ER with a lengthy orientation or perhaps one that offers a new grad residency/internship.
