Split days off?

Published

I am a new LPN, and recently started a job in a LTC facility, in a skilled nursing unit.

So far so good, except the scheduling really bothers me.

I work 5 days a week, 8.5 hours a day. One week I get the weekend off, and the next week - split days off, one weekday and one weekend day.

We have two mandatory in services each month, and this month one of them falls on one of my days off, which means I can't plan to do anything that day.

I work 30 miles from home.

I like many aspects about the job, but it's not my dream job either.

The pay isn't exceptional, and there is a heavy workload.

I went from being a stay-at-home mom with a free schedule, to being an employee without an outside life.

Does anyone else endure split days off?

Oh, and this is the way the schedule works for everyone. It will never change.

Thanks for letting me vent!

I sometimes call it "assembly line nursing."

So it's not just me.

I don't know, I always thought LTC was what I wanted to do, but this is crazy.

I'm so exhausted by the time I get home, I'm useless.

I'm in bed by 8.

I'm not sure this is going to work, and not sure I should want it to.

Just thought I'd update this old thread. I'm still at the same facility, almost 8 months now.

I'm so tired today.

I am about to go work my 6th day in a row. My last day off was last Tuesday. I'm off tomorrow - then have Wed., Thurs., and Friday to work before I"m off this weekend.

The bummer is that none of it is overtime. It's all straight time - working towards my 40 hours.

My husband had his hours cut drastically from his job last week, so it's up to me to bring home the bulk of the bacon for now. So he's understandably depressed, but I feel like I'm being pulled from all ends. I do most of the housework even though he does think he helps- and he does - but not like I would do it if I were here. I do the grocery shopping, the budget and bill paying, etc.

I never thought I'd have a job that only gives me two days off together twice a month! Management keeps changing and so does the schedule.

Thanks for letting me vent.
