Specific Schools

Published

I just had a question reguarding specific schools. I'm going to be applying for schools next fall and have around 8-10 picked out. Question #1 Why are some school costing less than 20K to complete while others are in greater than 60K. Question #2 New Britian in CT, Mayo Clinic in MN, UNCC, Minneapolis and the Arizona are some of my choices. Does anyone have any experience with the type and quality of education at these schools. Line exp, Regionals ...etc. Any help would help.

I know that at Mayo, the nurse anesthesia students may be passed over for cases in order to give them to the MDA residents. I used to work there and rarely saw anesthesia students in the heart rooms. The nurse anesthesia students also do not have as many opportunity for central line placement. This is info from a few years ago, so someone may have new information.

I can't help you with the cost of school question. I do know that the Franciscan Skemp program is around $7,000, but you also start taking call very early in the program.

Good luck. I applied to 2 schools and was lucky to be accepted at both.

Some depend on whether they are state schools or private schools. My advice would be to find a school that you think matches your learning style, and apply there. Don't worry about cost - you can borrow what you need and you will make enough to pay it back. The most important thing is to get a quality anesthesia education that works with your learning style.

UNCC is very inexpensive after you get over that first year out-of-state. When I projected it last year I was looking at around $30K total. The NC resident application is 3 pages long(=tough). I was also interested in going back to VCU and got resident status fairly easy (while still in Texas) and was looking at about $30K there (in-resident the whole time).

A friend of mine interviewed at Mayo 3 years ago and actually asked what's up with the poor central line experience. He go poo-poo'ed right in the interview. (He went to school in Texas instead)

UNCC is also weak on lines, but I've heard that it is easy to pick up on-the-job after graduation. Lord knows, I've seen many a resident drop lungs and such hacking away on someone. Charlotte is also politically hampered with regionals, so they farm us out to other towns (Ashville, Boone and other horrible places) for that.

On the good side, no anesthesia residents and lots of ORs.

I guess I was wondering if there is a corrolation between amount of money paid to program and the quality of the program.

I would talk to graduates of programs you have in mind to get their viewpoint of how well they liked the program in relation to the investment.

The "farming out" at UNCC is the best part of the program. Big Dave, you'll see what I mean when you get here.

total tuition for kaiser is about 15,000 and it's noted to be one of the best schools around.

I was joking. I've spent time in Ashville and Boone. Love those towns!

I checkind in at school today. Had a very positive reception. Someone even bought donuts and lemonade for my 7 year-old!

Signed a lease on a house today as well...everything is falling in place (except my student loan check is in mail limbo, and I need to get my stuff from San Antonio).

Question, when you are sent on the road, do they provide an apartment, or do I have to pony up the $$?

The Armed Forces will actually pay you to attend and USAGPAN was ranked only behind VCU in the most recent poll.

So what do you say?
