Specialty School

I am currently the nursing supervisor for a Texas school district. I am thinking about applying to a school for disabled children. I am not sure if I should apply because the open position is a night position (10:00 pm - 6:00 am) and have gotten very comfortable being on a day schedule. I have a long commute to work and the specialty school is in my ideal location. I would be giving up a supervisory role but will be gaining more experience. I was wondering if any of you have worked for a school with special needs children (ex: blind, deaf, or other special needs)? If so, how do you like the job and the experience.

Thanks!

I worked at a school for autistic children. Granted, it was a regular day school and my functions were that of a typical school nurse. The only difference really was interacting with the population of students and tailoring my approach in what I had to do. I did some of my clinical experience in a school similar to the specialty school where you are applying in the respect that the students were residents - but that was just a brief clinical experience years ago.

Anyhow - I liked my time at that school - i only moved on when I found an opening in a public school and a chance to latch on to the pension system (like THAT'S a big plus these days HAH!) Working with the children was very rewarding - you tend to get very attached and very excited for their accomplishments.

Thanks Flare, I broke down and applied yesterday. I think it would be a great experience. This school also has charge nurses (who have the same job description I have) and directors of health services; so there is room for advancement. I'm hoping to hear back from them soon. The good thing is this school is both a public school AND a state agency so I would maintain the benefits and sick time I have accrued ;)
