Specializing in one area like OB?

Published

I was just wondering if it was a possibility to specialize in one area of your choice as an CRNA. I realize it will highly depend on the position choosen. What I am asking, I guess, is it unheard of to specialize in say OB and do only epi's, sections, etc.?

Just wondering if all CRNA's just work an array of cases daily depending on the position/hospital or if some do veer off and do more of one type of case as their daily position?

Thanks in advance!

When I worked OB, our dept contracted with a private group of CRNA's that only did OB cases. One of them was in house at all times and a second was always on call and nearby in case a emergency came up. Occasionally, if the hospital was in a bind, one of the female CRNA's would help out with general surgery cases but it was always at her discretion and only when she did not have obligations to the OB dept.

Thanks so much! I have a great love for OB and will be spending alot of my time there I think during my RN years. I know I need at min. a yr. in an ICU to qualify for the CRNA programs but I think in the long run I would love to specialize more in the OB field.

I really appreciate your answer.
