Hello all!
I have a silly question....
I am currently taking pre-reqs for Nursing & would LOVE to work in the Nicu.
Here's my concern - I have an in-home daycare and have up to 8 kids at any given time...I have a couple of 1 year olds who cry nonstop...all they are wanting is to be held...I can't hold them non-stop with all the other kids...The nonstop crying is driving me bonkers & I'm having a hard time handling 10 hours per day / 5 days a week of crying...
I have 2 healthy kids of my own that were fortunate to not have any trouble at birth...they had times of normal crying, but it wasn't nonstop....
I'm very concerned that if this is driving me crazy, will I be able to handle working with babies in the Nicu? All I know is what I see on "TV" and I know that the shows aren't always accurate....
Is the Nicu a "cry-fest"....if so, how do the babies ever rest and get healthy?
Thanks so much for any feedback!!

Here's an up-date on the daycare situation....
The newest crier did miss her mommy and I feel she was thrown into daycare too quickly. She had spent the whole 1st year of her life with either mommy or daddy at home with her...The parents worked different shifts so one would always be there...I recommended they start off by bringing her one or two days a week to get her adjusted...However, they felt 5-days a week would be better....After 2-weeks, I talked to them and told them I would give it one more week to see if things levelled out...Things stayed the same...I was worried about the child's emotional well-being...That is why I let her go...Luckily she had a family member that was getting out of school for the summer that was able to watch her & I'm sure this made a world of difference as she adjusted to not being with her parents.
The other girl....there are so many twists & turns to her situation...It'd take all day to explain. She did miss her mommy & daddy, her parents did not get along, they wanted me to keep their kids later and later all the time...She learned to scream and 'cry' to get attention from mom...
ANYHOW~I was fortunate enough to find a job at a local hospital to work around our family life so I shut the daycare down.
I did not like having the little ones be like that...I did feel bad for them. There were just alot of things out of my control. Someone asked if I had to watch that # of kids....Yes I did or I couldn't pay my bills. Honestly the # of kids wasn't the problem. I kept a great schedule and was able to spend time with each of them...Some kids are just more needy than others...
Anyhow, the ? was concerning noise in the NICU, because I know if it was filled with alot of crying all the time, I couldn't do it. I'm sorry this turned into a daycare conversation along the way....That was not my intent...
