SPC in Tampa RN Requirements?

Published

Can anyone who has applied to SPC or are currently enrolled at this school in St. Petersburg, FL explain to me the selection process re the RN program as it relates to pre-reqs, gen ed and supporting ed classes.

I have the packet and it says that you have to have 11 credits from the gen ed and/or supporting ed section which entails:

micro and lab

speech

english 101

ethics

stats

humanities

but it also has 11 credits under pre-reqs heading i.e

Pre-Entry reqs 11 crs

anatomy and p 1 and lab 4cr

anatomy and p 2 and lab 4cr

psychology3cr

Computer/Information Literacy Competency Req

General Ed req 9 crs

Enc 1101

Spc 1600 Intro to Speech

Humanities/Fine Arts

Support Credits 10 crs

Micro 1 and lab 4 crs

Sta 2023 Elem Stats 3 crs

Phi 1600 Studies in Applied Ethics 3

I don't understand from the wording which 11 crs are required. I would think just the pre-reqs but then in the package it attributes some weird ratio of points to come up with a scale to select you i.e 60% of points are for gpa for gen edu/health classes and 40% for health program classes.

It is very confusing and any help would be appreciated. I am going to apply for the RN program in May for the Aug 2009 term. Currently, I have a M.BA and have completed all of the above classes except:

Micro and lab

Currently enrolled in A&P 1 and lab, Psych and Sociology

I plan on taking A&P 2 and lab and Growth and nutrition next spring and hopefully retakin Enc 101 which I told years ago and got a C. Hoping I can get an override and get at least a B or A this time over.

Thanks in advance.

I got my acceptance letter for PTEC's St. Pete's October LPN class -- I start on the 23rd. :)

Re: Hospitals in Tampa area that hire LPN's -- I know the Baycare group uses them, but it's rare that they're hiring from outside (I think you have a better chance getting a position if you're already an employee, if something comes up). They do have a few postings on their employment board though. A lot of hospitals are using LPNs in a PCT or PST role, which isn't horrible if you're getting your RN right away after LPN. According to PTEC, more people move into LTC or HHC rather than hospital work right after completing the LPN courses. You can always do that while going to school, then move into the hospitals as a GN or RN. Just a thought.

Hey CC I just got accepted into PTEC October 23rd class too! I am also going to be working on finishing up on pre-reqs through SPC while in school for LPN. I work at Bayfront right now and apparently they used to hire LPNs. The residency clinic they have does hire them though (this is where I work now until next week) also Bayfront hires LPNs in Home health. I did speak with my future manager and she said Bayfront will hire an LPN as long as they are in school working toward an RN so that is promising, but you are right, it is likely more in a PCT role (PCT level III). But Im so excited about finally getting started.

That's awesome Soy! It sound like we're on a pretty similar path. Are you going to be working through school too?

I'm excited about getting started too -- just ordered the vest today. Still need to get the shirt! And all white shoes -- my normal work shoes have a little bit of color on them, so they won't work for school.

Hey CC.. Yes unfortunately I have to work through out school as well. I have been working at the clinic at bayfront, but was able to apply for a transfer, so I will be working as a PCT throughout school (12 hr shifts). I am worried about getting burnt out but am determined and not working isnt an option for me. I am heading over to get everything paid on friday morning. I look forward to meeting you soon. (2 weeks!)

Like NewgoalRN i'm finishing up my pre-reqs at HCC. A&P2 now and micro this summer. I have a BA in criminology from USF. Most likely i'm going to do my darndest to get into the Erwin LPN program. I don't really have the time or money to commit to a 2yr RN program (I do for the LPN program), so i'll go the LPN route and then bridge over as soon as possible once I begin working. The fact that who you work for will pay for your RN is most definately a data point I can't look over.

May I ask which campus are you taking classes at at HCC? Currently, I am taking Micro, AP2 at Brandon and Nutrition on line a tDale Mabry. I will be applying for the Fall weekend/evening program beginning Jan 2010.

I'm taking AP2 at Dale Mabry. I have Manry for lecture and Talbot for lab. How do you like the Nutrition class? I've heard mixed reviews on it.

I had orientation on Sat for the Nutrition class. I am taking it with Angela Boyce. I had 2 friends who took her last semester and they both told me if you do the work and turn it in on time, it is an easy A. I am doing the online class.

So far it is pretty straight forward, 12 chapters of the book. However, online, she has chapter summaries that you can print out and some also has an audio file as a supplement for those who are auditory learners. At the end of each chapter, you do a 15-20 question quiz and submit on line. There are 2 exams which are only open for a week and there also is a portfolio to turn in which consists of 8 assignments. The assignments are all based on your first assignment which is to track what you eat for 3 days and then load it into the software for an analysis.

I printed all the assignments today and they seem to be broken down into Fats, Carbs, Proteins etc They go back and ask you based on what you ate those days to calculate the protein content, carbs etc. This is basically the Cliff notes of the class.

The first 5 quizes are due by the end of Feb so you have about a month to do each set of 6 quizs.

The best advice that I can see is that you can't missed the deadlines or you will get a zero.

Here is a hint, if you show up for the orientation, you get 20 pts. This can make the difference between an A or B or a B or C. It is based on 400 pts.

I am taking Micro at Brandon with Prof. Sally Treat- lots of info to memorize.

Sorry, correction: The quizzes for the Nutrition online class are 10 questions not 15-20.

this might be a little late, but i wanted to point out that you need to be a pinellas county resident to get into the spc- rn program. i noticed you sadi you were taking classes at hcc. most of the nursing programs give preference to students who live in the same county as the school.

http://www.spcollege.edu/program/nurse-as

you need to have all pre-entry requirements, gen-ed, and support courses to apply.

i was taking a&p2 along with micro at the same time. it was tough, but it wasn't that bad really.
