Southwestern College ADN 2016

U.S.A. California

Hello All,

I wanted to start this thread for those fellow applicants that applied for the Southwestern Community College Fall 2016 ADN Program. Not sure If this is a little late but I have yet to receive my notification regarding being invited or not for the program. As you can probably assume, I am extremely nervous right now and have been ever since I submitted my application. I've been in contact with Martha over there and she informed me that they were currently showing attention to the Step-Up program and they should be completed by this week. After completing their portion, the remainder of the letter will be sent out.

Has any one been offered a spot in the ADN program for the fall 2016 cohort yet?

thats odd, because they give you the sheet showing you the possible points in each area, gpa, experiences, teas score etc...

so it should be calculated, to the students who got in, i wonder what amount of points they had...

Hi congrats to

all of you who got accepted Iam applying for the fall 2017 and I was curious to know how many points those of you had when accepted just so I can figure out if I'm even competitive thanks again :)

Shoot for 75 points! If you are not a CNA then you need to go and take the 8 week course anywhere you can, its worth 25 application points. Its essentially impossible to get in without it. If you got all A's and B's in your sciences, communications, and psychology classes then you have a really good shot. I even had a C in anatomy but I made up for it with A's in microbiology and physiology. As far as the TEAS test goes there is not much you can do to prepare in my opinion if you have not taken it already I would brush up on nursing math for sure. If you already took it and scored higher then a 70 you have a good chance of getting in. Good luck the program is awesome. When you get in (which you WILL) contact me and I will be your mentor. Its tough and it is so much hard work but it is so worth it in the end!

I'm sitting at about 76 points right now that with me betting I get a 70 on the teas .. I'm just hoping that's enough points to get in

Hello,

Right now I have 30/30 for the Degree and CNA portion, I'm possibly 28/40 for the grades portion though, right now I have a 78 in my physiology course and if that happens I will end up with 15pts for my science gpa =( so I'm hoping to pull it up with my final. I have a overall GPA of 3.75 in generals then I will have the total 5/5 pts for life experience or special circumstance's, and 15 points for the TEAS test. The best case if I get my B in my last science is 78 points, if not Then I will have 73 points. Do I have a chance with 78 and 73? For fall 2017

I think you have a good chance! Of course the 78 would be a lot better then a 73 but either way you have a chance of getting it. I am not sure of your other science grades but that sounds like your grades are close to mine, even better then mine. When I applied I got the 30 points for CNA and having another associates degree. I got 26/40 for grades based on a 3.4 in generals and a 3.0 in my sciences. I got a A in physio, a B in micro, and a C in anatomy so I averaged a 3.0. I only got 3 or 4 in the special circumstances category, no foreign language but I scored well on my TEAS. I got a 83 and ended up getting 15 points. I totaled up my own and I believe I got 75/100 but I have no way to know for sure. Hopefully that makes you feel a little better! Take your TEAS soon!!! The format is changing and it is getting much harder!!!

so you got in I'm assuming, okay I'm so scared I don't have a chance.

Did you have to take a P.E class to receive your ADN at southwestern? HOW US THE PROGRAM BTW. ? IS IT DOABLE WITH CHILDREN ?

I am not sure. I have a prior degree that included P.E so I am not sure if it is required for the nursing program. I don't think so but I could be wrong. The best thing you can do is to email [email protected] and ask them and they will tell you.

The program is awesome! Very tough but a lot of fun. I am a weekend/evening student so my class size is smaller and we have class in the afternoon and clinical on Saturdays. We are like a little family, we can all count on each other. Come into the program with an open mind, you need to have a lot of flexibility. I am not sure what information you want to know but if you have questions feel free to ask me.

As far as doing the program with kids. it is totally doable. We have a student who is 8 months pregnant right now, a student that had a baby two weeks before class started, and a lot of students that have kids of all ages. Most people with kids ask to be in weekend/evening. If you plan on doing the day class you are in class all day Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. You will select which class you prefer at orientation and they try to accommodate everyone.

Hi All,

I will be applying to Southwestern among other programs around San Diego for Fall 2017. I was wondering if anyone knows if Southwestern will accept an EMT certification in place of the CNA on the point system? I'm an EMT and I work at UCSD La Jolla Hospital. I really need those points!! :)

No they don't .. they said that sent is not the same as cna two total different types of care

Although you will get the work related points, you would not get the 25 points for having your CNA license. The reason behind this is that SWC nursing is accelerated in the sense we do not go over CNA skills, you jump right into IV's, dressing changes, Foley insertion within your first few weeks. The first 8-10 weeks of class you are learning nursing skills in classroom setting and then you will be placed in a hospital for clinical. Most schools do not even have clinical during the first semester. Your first semester will be a pharmacology and fundamentals class and your clinical 15 hours per week. You essentially go to class 3 days a week whether you are days or eves. The great news though is that it only takes 8 weeks to complete CNA class and there are many schools that offer it for a reasonable cost. You need the 25 points, believe me. The average point score of the accepted student last fall was 77. Just get the license, and look into EMT to CNA classes, maybe they are even shorter since you have the medical foundation already. Good luck!
