Southern Ohio Jobs?????

Published

Anyone have any information on jobs, facilities, and other important career matters in this part of the state. I am particularily interested in Marietta, Athens, Columbus, and areas in between. I just need some pointers on who to avoid and who is good. Also a little pay info would be great. COL is pretty much in line with here and the weather and scenery is the same. Thanks to anyone who will take the time to answer these queries. Have a great day.

I have no idea about pay but I can tell you the cost of living is cheap in southern Ohio but not in Columbus. You will make more $$ in col but it will all go to the higher cost of living. And traffic is a nightmare in my opinion! Very big city and the roads can't handle all the traffic. If you move there, live close to where you work if possible. Traffic is backed up for hours on some of the interstates, esp downtown area at rush hour and north of town. Riverside or St Ann's would be my choice of hospitals in Col. Mount Carmel east is also OK, Grant used to be good but I heard it's went downhill. I worked at SOMC in Portsmouth years ago and was not impressed but I think they have gotten rid of a lot of the negative staff that used to work there. Not sure though. The cost of living is very cheap because there is nothing there!!!!!!!!!! No joke. Not even a place to shop without driving 30 minutes to Ashland unless you count Wal-Mart and K-mart. Hope this helps! Cheap property and cheap cost of living though, all through southern ohio, very economically depressed area. And the weather sucks too so be prepared. Cold winters, way too many grey days, a lot of rain during the hot humid summers. But fall is a beautiful time to enjoy the weather and changing of leaves! Ashland Ky is right across the river and has a couple of hospitals that are better than most in Southern Ohio. Just my opinion. Hope this helps some!

There is a GREAT hospital in a town called Wilmington, Ohio. It is CMH Regional. It is fantastic to work for. Pay is great, benefits are too. They treat their staff like they should be treated. I worked there prior to moving to a different state. I loved it.

The cost of living is cheaper in Clinton County also.(Which is where Wilmington is at).

I fully recommend it!

and experienced absolutely NO negativity. Just the opposite actually. I worked in the pharmacy 1999-2000. My boys were in a near drowning in March of 2000 and the entire hospital was supportive. Nurses I didn't even know, from different shifts that I worked took up collections of money and cards for us. They sent toys for my son who wasn't permanently injured in the accident, his birthday was 5 days after the accident. Sister Eleanor (one of the most awesome of nuns! :) ) called frequently. Most of the entire pharmacy staff made the 1 1/2 hr, one way drive to see me and my sons.

The experience I had working there was great. I would go back, but I was at work when the drowning happened and it does bring back bad memories just by being in that hospital.

No, there's not much shopping in southern Ohio, but there is tons of history and beauty. We have indian history (Serpent Mound, Mound City...) , lots of caves, beautiful countyside.....and if you've always lived in Florida or somewhere tropical the winters may be especially exciting for you! :wink2:

But really, there are tons of supportive and caring people down here in our area. Even though it is a pretty poor area, it's still home.

No offense intended to skicheryl or anyone else, just thought I should defend our little little area of the world here. :)

Thanks to each one who answered my inquiry. I am from the mountains neighboring your state and have lots of family in Ohio. I am not offended and do not care if people think there is nothing to do here or there. I like all the seasons, I am used to driving in snow or rain. I am not interested in Columbus except for weekend type work. I think I will be paying a little more attention to some areas as hubby is agreeing to get out of this area before the lights go out for good.
