Hi,
I have a long story, but I will tell you and try to stick the main points. I started college right before I turned 18...and I just turned 22. Im a hard worker, did a bunch of pre req's for radiologic tech program when I first started college right out of highschool. My first semester of the program I took alot of classes plus clinicals. I got all A'S B's in all classes besides the clinical part. Me and my older sister (she kinda just followed me) started program together...she ended up dropping out. The instructor at clinicals seemed like she had something against us and gave me a D+. I was so upset...ended up switching programs. I never fought it..maybe I should of, but I dont know if I loved it anyways. I then went into the medical assistant program and graduated with my A.A.S. in December 2010. I am also certified. Im in a hard situation, because I spent all my money it took forever to save up and drained my bank account while in school. Now Im starting all over! I dont have my own vehicle so thats why I had to turn down this one job as an ma (long story). I have been at a local hospital since the end of May. Was a nursing assistant for a few months (up until end of July). I bid on another position (got lucky)..and not just finished training and have been on my own a few times as a unit clerk. Im making a few more dollars an hour ($14.29) but its part time..and I need full time eventually. So IDK if I definitely will, but even after all the trouble I went through in college (had multiple problems with the college)...it sortta went through my mind to look into lpn or phlebotomy program. I have to find out all the info..not even sure when I would have to register by. The program director of LPN was same as my Medical Assistant program (which I think she neglected that program bc I deff did not get much hands on experience at all!) Can someone tell me what are some things I can do/work as an LPN anyways? What is the rate per hour? Are there jobs out there? I live in Buffalo,NY College was really stressful...Cant believe Im considering going back! The thing is I was at the college for 6 semesters total..so I dont know if I will ever be able to get financial aid again..I definitely need it though. Oh yeah, I have 6 classes done aready so would just need 6 more. The thing is Im afraid that school might interfere with my work..which I dont want to have to quit I am fairly new. All 6 semesters b4 I was a fulltime student and worked part time, just that now I have more set days to work.Thank you and I guess what is meant to happen will. Sorry if I went on but wanted to give you some what of an idea.

hi there, i'm kinda in the same boat as you. I also live in the buffalo area and work as a medical assistant. I went to ECC for that program. I have been workin as an MA for a year and a half, and will be starting the BOCES LPN program October 12. Have you considered that program? Its from 4-10 pm mon-thurs and I chose it because it will allow me to work days still at the doctors office. And the big plus for me is that they let you use financial aid. I qualified for it and i make 13/hr, and already used a lot of aid at ECC.
What location for BOCES program? I dont know when they offer it next, but the 12th is almost here. Its hard becasue I dont have my own vehicle. It would be hard because I work until 3. What about clinicals? So do you know what LPNs duties are generally, where they work, rate of pay, and jobs around here? I still have to try again to get a hold of people at the college. Yeah Trocaire is expensive also..just closer, and used to it. I just deff need financial aid and see what the schedule would be like etc. Thanks for your response..nice to talk to local ppl.

I don't want to seem like I am being rude, but have you looked online for your area regarding pay rates? You can do a google search and come up with some of the information. If you would like more detailed help, get a hold of the employment development department in your city, I am sure that they can give you pay rates for LPNs in your area.
As far as duties of an LPN are concerned, you can google that as well, and it does vary from state to state. Keep your head up! If there is a will there is a way. Personally, I would ensure that I had reliable transportation sorted out before beginning any program. Consider how you will get back and from your required clinicals. There is a big difference between Phlebotomy and Nursing. Do some research and find out what you think would be the better fit for you. It would really stink if you got into something that you totally hated.
Whatever you decide, all the best in your future endeavors.

Thanks, yeah I have searched online, and it is really hard to get an accurate rate of pay. Also alot of job descriptions are vague. I called my college I have attended b4 and spoke to the women in career center and she told me $15-16.75..but Im not sure how accurate that is either. I was thinking about actually calling some places up to see what they say. Well Im trying to do as much research as possible, but its hard when I cant even get a hold of the program director to talk and get a better idea. She was the program director for my old program..and shes all over the place if you know what I mean. Yes im concerned about transporatation, but its like I drained my bank accoiunt before while I was in school and was still working part time. Its not like I can wait around forever and save a whole bunch up. Also, dont know why, but I have a fear of driving. So just have to keep trying to get a hold of the director etc at the college and wait for the course schedule to come out. Im very nervous to, because the LPN program is only offered during day and probably will interfere with my work hours, then idk what Ill do. Also hoping I can get enough financial aid as possible.

I actually looked into Trocaire because my mom went there, but this program worked out better for me because of my work schedule, I also work until 3, so I'll be heading straight to class. Theres two locations, one at the Kenton BOCES and another one at the Potters Rd BOCES, which I will be going to. Our first clinical site is ECMC but i'm not sure yet about the other 2. The Potter Rd BOCES is pretty close to Trocaire, right? Maybe it wouldnt be so hard for you to get to. They start classes twice a year, once in April and again in October. You have to take a placement test at the BOCES office on Walden, near Harlem Rd. Then you have an interview. I believe the total cost is around $8000. Hope this helps some!
Thanks for the info! I just wish I had a little more time to figure things out. Or I would have to wait until April if I decide to go with BOCES. I requested a catalog..havent received it though. Im just wondering why they send students (I dont know what other schools do) to hospitals, when LPN's really arent hired in hospitals in most places. I work at Mercy and Trocaire is very close to Mercy..wish if I had to do it in a hospital it could be there but idk. Im not sure if Trocaire only uses Catholic Health sites for clinicals. What hours/days are your clinicals? Thanks! OH yeah..I have to wait until mid November to even see when the classes are offered at Trocaire next semester...bummer (Thats one big part of it). I looked at this semesters class catalog online but I didnt see some of the classes...so idk. Not sure how much the classes vary each semester. What did your mom go to Trocaire for by the way?
