Soon to be Student of Deaconess school of nursing...

I am a soon to be student of Deaconess School of Nursing,They offer web based training with little on campus visits (7 days total for the first year). It is very much an indep. study program. At DCN they expect you to find a clinical receptor. The encourage you to do it asap. So I am looking into possibly doing my 384 hours at a Mental health hospital (if the hospital would take me) because I am deffinetly intrested in possibly working in a psych ward after I get my LPN.

I would really like to know what the duties of a LPN would be in a psych ward.

Any other feedback would be nice too.

Hi Did Deaconess indicate that a psych hospital was a okay as a placement site? I was under the impression that it needed to be a hospital.

I work as a PCA in the Geriatric Psych unit until I graduate in December. I have learned more about the geriatric population than any other place. Our unit, since it is at Good Sam, experiences a lot of med-surg patients in addition to delierium, dementia, bi-polar, etc. It is not true med-surg for sure, though. You get all your valuable skills there (NG tubes, chest tubes, etc). On psych, you just value humanity a bit more and get to see the side many people dont want to see. I don't care for regular psych, yet. We have an LPN on our unit and she is....shhh (don't tell anyone) working as an RN basically. All the same responsiblities, and she is so sweet, yet strong with those patients. Good Luck!
