Something funny NS grads can enjoy

Published

I have been studying madly for nclex, took a break and turned on tv. There's Judge Judy (or was it Mathis...?? I don't even know, lol, it was a quickie!).

Anyway, the defendent is some snotty-mouthed young 20-something mother of a toddler who is obviously getting chewed out for being irresponsible, lazy, deceptive, etc etc. She responds to an accusation that she can never hold a job by saying "you don't know anything, I'm going to nursing school to be an RN!" So the judge (who??) asked "you're taking classes now?" She says "no, they haven't started yet". Judge: "ok, but you're enrolled?" Snot: "no, but I'm GOING to be....." :uhoh3:

LOL!

Yep, she's well on her way to becoming an RN, alrighty, practically there now.

I flipped off the tv and went back to my Kaplan quizzes.... :monkeydance:

Specializes in Ortho/Neuro.

Sounds like she'll be a great nurse :uhoh3:

Specializes in PCU/TELE.

I have seen so many of those on my campus!!

I think we all have them on our campuses.

My prereq classes were kind of scary. I would make a list for each class of the people I hoped wouldn't make it into a program for the sake of patient safety.

I was actually thinking along the lines of her seeming to think she only needs a pencil to get in, and full financial aid will fall into her lap.

Since when does "thinking about going to nursing school" equate with "getting INTO nursing school"? Why on earth would she expect RESPECT because she "plans to" go to school at some point?

Yeesh.

Reminds me of a patient's friend the other week. Patient is in abdominal pain, young girl, probably constipated. Doc has seen her, still writing orders for CT and meds. Not yet the top of the RN's list. this is in the ER.

I'm sitting in for the secretary (I was a tech until today!) b/c we were short-staffed. Patient's friend comes out and says "When are we going to do something for her!"

I explain that the Doc has seen here, but hasn't written orders yet. I will send the nurse in, but she's with another patient right now. This is all roughly 15 nanoseconds after the MD leaves the room.

She keeps complaining, saying the Dr has definitely not seen her. I point him out, "that is the doctor and he just left her room." Complaining continues. I state "I'm sorrry but I will call the nurse. I can't help you beyond what I've already told you."

She replies "(snoot) I know YOU can't." brushes her hand at me. :angryfire

With all my willpower, I wanted to leap over the desk but I reassure her "Sit tight, I am going to call the nurse for the patient."

"Oh, I know what 'sit-tight' means, I'M IN NURSING SCHOOL."

:uhoh3: hahahahahahahahaha (btw, I have no idea what derogatory meaning sit-tight means to nursing students. I didn't learn that one in Ethics.)

"Congratulations, I'm starting as a nurse here next week!. I'll send the nurse in soon.'

Commence head explosion.

Honestly, though, I was more annoyed she thought she could talk to me like that b/c I was in the secretary's desk!!!

With that attitude, translate "I'm in nursing school" to mean either "I wanted to get into nursing school, but still have 12 pre-reqs to go" or "I'm starting CNA classes next week". But don't worry, she's an EXPERT, lol....

I have an acquaintance who, on the rare occasion the subject of my schooling came up within a certain group, felt the need to announce "I'm going to be a pediatric nurse" until someone fell for the bait and asked "oh really? You're in school too?" She replied "I haven't started classes yet, my FIRST PRIORITY is my kids, I'm so involved with them right now, and my job {she works in a convenience store} but in a few years, I'll start. I know I'll be in a pediatric specialty. I don't want to do general nursing; pediatrics really needs good nurses who understand kids."

The weird part is, the group she said this in was a bunch of PTA moms, and *I'M* more involved at the kids' school that she is, LOL! They're well aware of the insane schedule I kept to keep my grades high AND my kids knowing I was always there, too. I guess the truth hurts and it's easier to try to put someone else down than get off your butt and lift your OWN self up. My two cents, anyway :)

Oh, and as a follow-up: it's been two years since that conversation, and she's about as close to entering nursing school as I am to becoming Pope. I'm not even Catholic. :) Who knows, maybe she's "going to be" a brain surgeon now. Well, when she's ready to start, anyway....
