I work and was educated in Canada. I now work in an ER department and man some people who come in to see a doctor make you wonder why you are in this nursing profession, while others are make you want to cry. I had a woman come in when I was working at triage, no hello or anything her first comment to me was "how long is this going to take" putting her hand on her hip. I asked her to take a seat and talk to me about her concerns. She sits and tells me that she "has a cold for the last 2 weeks and was walking by and thought she would stop and see a doctor". WHen I asked if she had a family doctor she rolls her eyes and says "well of course but I am too busy to take time off work to see him for just a cold" . I am trying to keep my professional composure by this time. As she hums and haws about whether or not to stay because she would have to wait (oh my god heaven forbid) I tell her that "it does cost a few hundred dollars to check in with me (the triage nurse) and administration," she tells me "I don't care I pay taxes and I am sure I pay alot more than most people in this room". SO anyways she registers with me and has her paper work done, within 3 seconds of having her paper work complete, she walks over to my desk and says "yeah I am leaving this is crazy I shouldn't have to wait". And she walks out. I don't understand the whole entitlement thing? Why would she think that because she 'pays taxes' that she can spend that kind of money( $375.00 plus this is only to talk to me not to see the MD to have xrays bloodwork etc.) on something that WAS NOT an EMERGENCY hence the name Emergency Room.
Am I the only Canadian RN feeling under appreciated and feels like banging her head against the wall with these stupid people, who don't understand how fortunate they are to have this healthcare system?
I dont like dealing with rude people period. Before I ever thought of nursing, I did customer service call center work or hospitality and I couldnt stand the rudeness of people over trivial things. It puts a downer on your day and I know it should be water off a ducks back but sometimes it hurts.

Hey Pepper The Cat: I know just what you mean, when my father in law was discharged from hospital delirious, constipated etc., the only ones there to get him were my spouse and I. All the regular, frequent, annoying visitors were gone with the wind.
