Hi everyone,
I've been googling, asking around, and decided to come here for some additional advice.
I am an undergrad, 2 and half semesters through and decided to finally do nursing. I applied to and gotten accepted to NYU and the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
With that being said, I'm confused. NYU is very expensive, I don't qualify for fin aid and definitely don't have the money to pay (nor does my parents).. yes, everyone knows the drill, I'm sure.
Mount Saint Vincent isn't very close to my home and I would be living there. They offered me a $10,000 scholarship as well. Many people like the sound of NYU but I don't necessarily want to pay for a name. NYU would be easier access to my job that is also in the city. I have visited NYU already and awaiting for visit Mt. St. Vincent after new years. I have to make a decision by the 9th of January!
Has anyone here gone to either school? I haven't heard too much of Mount Saint Vincent, have you?
Also, my mother is a nurse for over 30 years now, she is warning me about having a part-time job and doing nursing school at the same time. Is it that impossible?
Thank you for your time!

Hello dear, I can't offer any advice but I just wanted to share that I got accepted to NYU also for Spring 2009. They start January 20th and I JUST got my letter of acceptance. And I'm on the west coast. Wish me luck! I might see if they will let me defer... there's no way I can be on the other side of this country in just a matter of weeks. Maybe this will help you decide? http://www.op.nysed.gov/nurseprogs-nclex-rn.htm#Baccalaureate
I wasn't too happy to see that class size has been increasing as the pass rates are decreasing at NYU.
Good luck with your decision!

Girls who go to Mount St Vincent are nicknamed Mounties and their brother school was Manhattan College. I don't know if they're still sex-segregated, though.
It's Roman Catholic, so that will have some bearing on your education.
That said, it has always had a fine reputation and I would go for the scholarship and affordable tuition.
My brother's an NYU grad, BTW. Not in nursing.

I graduated from Manhattan College in 2003 and I took a lot of my class over at the "Mount"
The campus is beautiful and it's a small school so you will get lots of personal attention from your professors. I wasn't a nursing major though so I don't have any specific info about the nursing program.
I say go with the Mount and I will tell you why.
I actually go to Monroe College in the Bronx (LPN program last year and RN this year). During the LPN program my psych professor was an adjunct from NYU and my Med/Surg professor was a full time professor at the Mount. So guess what? Many nursing instructors get around. I have had professors that teach at the CUNYs and the others schools that I already mentioned. My psych instructor actually joked with us that we were getting him for half-price so we should be grateful because the NYU students are paying something like 15k a semester and our tuition is half of that. Is the quality of education any better? Well, if the professors are the same then what's the difference except for some $$$ and a name. Also both schools are CCNE accredited and neither are NLNAC accredited but of course as long as they are accredited by the State of NY that is what really matters (and they are of course).
Also I work with an LPN who goes to NYU for the traditional BSN program. You will never attend a lecture with 200 students at the Mount. The classes are small....25 students or less...plenty of personal attention to go around.
I do my clinicals at Bronx Lebanon and meet nurses who graduated from every where from Columbia to Helene Fuld. So I know that people take great pride in their school name but I'm telling you that once your working it will not matter one iota. An RN is an RN is an RN and since you are going for the BSN you are good to go since most New York Hospitals prefer BSN grads anyway. However, even that doesn't always matter because ADNs get the jobs too!
Just go wherever is cheapest and study hard!
One more post and then I will shut up!
Yes CMSV is a Catholic college so you will be required to take some religion courses. We Manhattan students had to take 9 credits and I believe that CMSV requires the same amount. I dreaded it at first because I am not religious at all. The classes turned out to be great! I learned a lot and I never felt pressed to convert (one of my silly fears) or felt that Christianity was being shoved down my throat. You don't even have to take religion classes that relate to Christianity, they have a variety of courses to choose from.
As far as being able to go into the City to work. There is a shuttle bus that runs between CMSV and Manhattan (every half hour or so) and it stops at the 241st station of the 1/9 train which is a few blocks down the road from Manhattan and the ride to Mid-town is about 30-40 minutes.
Now I am feeling nostalgic Man those were the days!
Thank you so much for the responses!
