Got a big ole endocrine test coming up tomorrow and as I wrap up loking over my notes I found a side on the power point that I must've missed before. When discussing Diabetes Mellitus, my text references two forms of hyperglycemia Dawn's phenomenon and Somagyi effect. To me they seem to be the same thing: early am hyperglycemia. Can anyone explain the difference? THanks.

Dawn's: increased insulin resistance in AM hours. Affects everybody to some extent.
Somogyi effect: rebound hyperglycemia due to release of glucagon and cortisol to chase nighttime hypoglycemia. Seen in diabetics, mostly.

They do sound similar, but the treatments are different.
Somagyi- you wanna decrease their insulin to treat it.
Dawn- you want to increase it.
