Jul 22, 2012 When I went through college the first time around about 10 yrs ago, the nursing program that I was interested in required sociology of the family as a prerequisite. I think you may find some value in the class. It reminded me a little of developmental psychology.

I think my sociology classes have helped me tremendously in understanding different kinds of patients I may be taking care of. Often we will be incorporating some of the same concepts in Health Promotion or one of the nursing theory courses and some people, who haven't taken sociology, seem to have trouble understanding how people's economic status, education level, environment, race, gender, and sexuality affect their health status and how they respond to the health care system. Go for it! I took a class called Marriage and Family, which is similar I think, and it was a really interesting course. If you have a good professor, I don't think you'll regret it! The only reason why I ended up with a sociology minor is because I had to stay in school for a year while I waited to get into the program, and it opened up my eyes to a lot of issues people face that nurses have to work with when giving care.

I think it will help me to better understand my patients and the things they may be going through that relates to family relationships and their care. I'm excited about it!

You will love the course, it's very helpful and informative because afterall you will not only be treating the patient but the family as well so having some knowledge about different structures is always helpful. I have a Bachelors in Sociology/Pre Law

To be honest, I'm not getting much out of it but that could just be because it's online. I hate online classes but that's just what worked out for me right now. Not a bad class and a good option for a humanities elective though.
