this is a book by marianne pilgrim calabrese. i picked it up yesterday at barnes and noble and i thoroughly enjoyed it. it is an easy read - if you can find a few hours in an afternoon or evening, you can complete it in one sitting, it's only about 175 pages.
it goes over a lot of the stuff we get here - real life case studies of nurses succeeding or not succeeding due to politics, policies, etc. it's about how to survive in nursing once you get a position. the real stuff of nursing and it makes you think long and hard about this profession we have all chosen. it's about how to deal with doctors, co-workers, administrators, patients, families. there's even a ten commandments of nursing.
the chapters i found most helpful are the explanation of the hierarchical system in a health facility and the different type of nurses and nursing personalities. but also the book helped really solidify my decision to pursue nursing. i have to write an essay on why i want to be a nurse and i really wasn't sure what to say, outside of my passion to work with people and make a difference and a natural inclination towards the medical sciences. this book has helped me clarify my focus.
my only criticism of the book is that it is not written by a nurse. sure, the author researched and interviewed doctors and nurses and spent time in various facilities observing, and even tho the book is very good and my mother, the rn, said it is pretty realistic, i just think it would have more credibility if it was written by a nurse.
