Hello All. I Was Thinking If It Was A Good Idea To Get A Cna Then Work My Way Up To Rn. How Long Does It Take To Get A Cna? & Does It Pay Enough To Get Through College? I Really Need Some Advice.

My advice is to skip the cna stuff and at least shoot for a LVN. I wasted my time and money(actually my mothers) going to cna school...the pay is not worth the work and you will be driven from the field completely.....I am now a LVN and much more happy.

CNA jobs in my area (DFW) tend to pay between $8.50 and $11 hourly. Be advised that the work is backbreaking and not very prestigious. I used to be an aide 6 years ago and, while the work was rewarding, I could never quite become accustomed to the smell of poop.

The CNA will be a wonderful stepping stone into the field of nursing if you are willing to feed patients, give baths, clean up urine and feces, make beds, dress patients, perform a lot of heavy lifts, and do many basic nursing tasks.

I would definitly do CNA. Most LVN schools require you to atleast pass a cna course anyway. It will also bring you into reality of what a CNA really does for the pt. There will be times when even as a RN you will do total care for your pt. I have seen new nurses come straight out of school attempting incont. care on a pt. it took 3 new LVNs and still could not figure it out, finally one of our wonderful highly valued CNAs educated the LVNs. You will be a better nurse and more able to delegate task by being able to put yourself in the shoes of your coworkers.
