So Many Students! Will Shortage Now End?

Nursing Students General Students

I've been reading posts on here and I just can't help to notice how many nursing students there are out there, some on the verge of graduation, others just now starting their programs and others like me who are lurking on here and beginning their prerequisites. If all goes well and as planned, I should be finished with my accelerated BSN by the beginning of the summer in 2011. Cannot help to wonder if I will be graduating into a market that's overrun with nurses and have trouble getting work. Let alone the concern on here that new grads are having a hard time getting hired ...

One small reason I am leaving the legal profession, there are just too many lawyers out there! In hindsight, I should have steadfastly followed my childhood dream of entering the medical profession, but better late than never!

This thread has scared the white nursing school pants off of me! I am a new nursing student. I did get laid off 2 years ago. I did NOT chose nursing because it would be job security, although that did help! I chose nursing because it is my lifelong dream. I just didn't have the guts to chase my dream in my younger years.

I had some concerns about being able to find a GN job because I always keep an eye out for those postings and I am not seeing them. Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville will announce in May if they are going to have any, from what I have heard. But, after reading all the posts on here I pulled up one job posting for a med surge nurse and they oly require licensure, no experience. Some of the jobs in other areas specify desired experience. Hopefully, that means there are other jobs like that one out there. I previously worked as a tech and I intentd to do that again, because I think it will help me get an RN position if they are already familiar with me.

I notice (as many others did) that there is quite a bit of anger on this thread. I am not here to threaten anyone's job security. I am hoping to gain some security of my own and I am very nervous. But, I will continue to focus on becoming the best nurse I can possibly be! Eventually it will pay off! Even if it means keeping my existing job longer than I had planned!

good luck to everyone!
