I've been reading all the great posts for MONTHS. Thanks to all of you who are willing to share your knowledge, what a great bunch of people.

I am really interested in the LNC area of nursing. It would be a big change from what I have done so far in my career which has been Med Surg, Public Health, Home Health and Hospice. Graduated in '97 so have some experience. I did request information from the VMI several months ago but got busy with "life" and never really did persue it. Stumbled across the LNC part of this forum about a month ago and have been looking into it ever since.

My question is this: How many of you actually work another nursing job as well as doing LNC work? I work full-time with Public Health , M-F, 8 hour days...wondering when I would have TIME to be a LNC? I am very interested in this different field of nursing. I live in a pretty small town in the Midwest, altho I do have access within 15 minutes or so to bigger towns. In what ways did you find out if there is a need for LNC's in your area? I am a single mom with kids to support - so pretty much needing to know how I can find out if being a LNC would pay the bills...

i think most LNC's keep their full time jobs until they can support themselves with the consulting. i will be taking the VMI course this oct., and i'm worndering if i should move to a metropolitan area and work like 4 days a week at an insurance company until i build my business. I would have to have at least one week day off a week to do cold calling, and market my business. and if i'm working in an insurance company doing the same kind of work, i will be getting experience in the field while i'm building my business.

i live about 2 hours froma large city.

Hello, Kay,

Yes, many start out as LNC and keep their full-time postitions as RNs. I did. After a short while part-time, I decided to do my business full-time. I went part-time/prn after that. Was in a position to do so.

Marketing is tough and after you receive your LNC education, you must consider that. It takes determination, dedication, etc., in order to successfully market your business as LNC.

Hello, a21chdchic,

Good luck with the course.

You should not have to relocate in order to be successful. Just market to the attorneys outside your immediate area.

If you want to work in-house with an insurance company, that is fine. You will get some experience that way.

I am still working 32 hrs a week in the ER and do this on the side, which is fine with me right now. I may do it full time if or when I no longer can physically run around an ER!....I am new to this forum, love reading it, and thanks to all who contribute!
