2020 small achievements

Published

Friends and colleagues: an important announcement!  I have found one small ray of hope in my 2020 school nursing practice.

COVID is still a disaster, the number of orders/meds/care plans that I have received from parents or physicians is zero, our nurse:student ratio is 1:bazillion,  and I'm working in a poorly ventilated space with a questionable PPE scenario and no clear plan for contact tracing BUT...

I GOT RID OF THE DONATION/CLOTHING CLOSET!  It's gone.  It's not in my office anymore - someone else is in charge of it, and it's physically located in another building.  Things that are now not my problem: dress code violators who need a t-shirt ("ew, not THAT one"), deodorant emergencies, tactful diversion of especially hideous donations (how many 15 year olds want a 1990's blazer?), nighttime dropoffs of expired canned goods, and the endless sorting/washing/folding of random pants.  I'm free!

What's your 2020 small achievement?  Nothing is too small or too ridiculous!

Woo hoo! The loud, massive printer that was put in the center of my office during a construction project in the Summer of 2019 has finally been taken out!  I complained about it for a year to no avail, but they had to get rid of half of the big printers for budget reasons, and the IT guy (knowing how much I hate that printer being in my office) suggested mine go first!  This also means I can't be the printing genie anymore.  You need 50 copies of this exam booklet in the middle of a pandemic?  TOO BAD!

Low volume due to less than half the student population being in the building at one time means that lunch is being enjoyed daily. ? ??????

Went from seeing 40-50 kids per day to average of 5!!  When this is all over ( COVID)  I will be sure to remind the teachers that every little thing does not need to come to the office.  AMAZING!!!

We are remote, BUT I figured out Google classroom and set up a virtual school nursing office!!  And because there are usually only 6 of us in the building everyday, my principal usually buys us all lunch!!

I got rid of a color printer that lived on my desk AND files that lived in my second exam room.  Neither belonged to me, nor did I have access to use them.  It was a happy day when I had adequate support for getting that stuff out of here!  Congrats on your clothes closet victory!

I got a brand new printer and an update to an admin laptop and a large extra monitor (to go along with my COVID point of contact status) and it is a huge help!

Also, I threw out most of the extras in the clothing closet. And get to say NO to any donations for the rest of the year :).

All the health conditions are entered and I get lunch most days.

When we had to take a catheterization back last year I got rid of the clothes closet!

My hair mysteriously changed from straight to curly (yay hormones!) and I have been learning how to care for naturally curly hair. Big learning curve!!
I am proud to say that I have finally got a routine that leaves me with somewhat decent hair so I don't look like I am homeless.
I have even watched a few hair care videos while sitting at my desk ?
