I am a newbie to dialysis, just finished my 3rd week of training as a PCT. I am wondering what is the best way to handle my sleep patterns? I start at 3 am, but leave aby 2:20 ish to get to work on time. I'm off by 4 pm, and get home around 430 pm. Even if I go to sleep by 6, I'm still tired. Is this just because I'm new, or not used to busy dialysis work?
lots of nurses & techs sleep on their breaks, good?? Bad?? I'm scared of not waking up after lunch lol.

I've never worked a 9 - 5 job, and just finished 12 years noc shift. Everybody is different, you'll just have to experiment. :zzzzz

i have been in dialysis for about 14 months now. prior to that i worked 12 hour nights for many years- was never a good day sleeper!! so, actually, getting up at 3:30 a.m. to be at work at 5:00 a.m. works better for me, believe it or not! i function very well on 6 hours of sleep, & find this schedule a lot more normal for me than working nights!

I too found it difficult getting up at 4am, I am rarely asleep before 11, but am sometimes overcome by 7pm. My days off are largely spent in bed recooperating from work. As I adjust to a new job, I am able to sleep less, since so much of the work is routine and you develop more efficient habits, and get to know the patients.
Please don't sleep on the job though. At most hospitals it is cause for immediate dismissal.IMHO it is extremely unprofessional, especially for a nurse.

lol sorry, didn't meant to make it sound like co workers were sleeping during work, i meant they were sleeping during their breaks.
i am working 4 12 hour shifts at the moment, and when the shifts are back to back it seems harder to me than when they are spread out. i worked 3 shifts last week, it seemed much better for me than working 4 shifts.
thanks for the help!:heartbeat
