Sinus surgery, Versed, and memory issues.

Published

my wife is having surgery next week to remove some sinus tissue growing into the surrounding tissue and fix a deviated septum. is Versed regularly used in this procedure? she is using her down time after surgery to study for the NLN-entrance exam, if used would Versed affect her ability to remember stuff she studies before and after her surgery? we are both taking the entrance exam in a couple of weeks and once we take it cannot retest for 1 year so it is vital we do well this time. i am just a bit worried for her (i am already scorin 145/160 on practice tests).

This is something best discussed with your physician.

I hear some like to use Versed just for the amnesic effect just to cover their butts, and would likely downplay any side effects. for that reason i was hoping a crna might give me an unbiased opinion on the matter. (i usually dont trust the car salesman when HE says its a good car, i like a unbiassed opinion).

All general anesthetics/benzos/barbs can cause memory problems most effects are cleared within 24hrs, but postoperative cognitive dysfunction has been shown to happen in some people several months out.

In general a healthy adult patient that has had general anesthesia before should not have any serious problems with cognitive function 24-48hrs out of surgery/general anesthesia.

It is something to discuss with your anesthesia provider.

As stated by above members, you best have your wife discuss all of these issues you've raised with her healthcare providers.

We wish her a safe, uneventful surgery.
