I was wondering if anyone here had perm nail root removal.I am getting it done (to the tune of 500.00!! thank god for insurance). What is the receovery time if anyone has had it, when can I wear shoes and can Pod's prescribe drugs? I can't take motrin and this may kill.
Im just wondering, how is the procedure done over in the Us? Do you do the same stuff as us booring europeans (local anastesia with xylocaine, rubber banding the toe/finger to empty it of blood, cutting the piece of nail out and then fenol to etch the unwanted piece of nail-root away?)
That's exactly how the podiatrist did mine (about 5 years ago).

Lots of podiatrists do it that way. Instead of phenol, I use 10% sodium hydroxide, and neutralize it with 5% acetic acid. Using alcohol to stop the action of the phenol is just a dilution and may not get all of the phenol out of the tissue. NaOH and acetic is an actual chemical neutralization and seems to be more complete. I do know that my healing times are a LOT faster since I started doing them this way.

Short version is that I still dearly love patient care but HATE the way that I now spend huge amounts of time every day doing bullsh*t stuff which is counter productive to giving that care: tracking down patient referrals, communications with insurance companies, dealing with bogus payment rejections, never ending new regulations, dwindling payments and escalating costs. As a nurse, I'll still give patient care whatever field I settle down in, but at the end of the week I'll take my pay check, go home and leave the worrying to someone else. Besides, change is GOOD.
