Hi all. I am interviewing for a position in the SICU and I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions for questions I should ask the manager... I always go blank in interviews and would like to go in with some material ready. I know about our staffing ratios, etc... but well... I dunno. Any advice? I've only worked med-surg and while I've always wanted to work on a unit, I don't have much to go off of.

I just got a job in SI back in April. My main questions were, though obvious:

1. nurse to pt ratio

2. Who are my resources, is there an intern or resident during my shift or how do I get in touch with the MD's, RT's, etc.

3. How long is the orientation process, do I have the option of extending the period if I am not yet comfortable

4. How many beds are in this unit and how many nurses are staffed per shift

5. How does the scheduling policy work, holidays, on call- we self schedule

Those are just a few, the manager gave me a pretty in depth overview of the unit before the interview began. Good luck, hope this helps.
