Hospitals are in dire straits..yes...BUT...have you ever seen a CEO go without a pay raise even though they make ungodly amounts?

I agree with JadedNurse. I love Nursing but it is time we get what we deserve. And if you believe that just because the CEO's and the Administrators are saying they are losing money then you are more naive than I thought. I say give me your budget, I'll fix it real quick. I am a single mom with 3 kids to support. For those of you that say you'll take a pay cut, how can you say that and not think of your collegues. There is a ton of money in the health Industry, it just goes to the wrong people. I suggest we all start pressuring our state politicans, and make some noise.

We've had this discussion numerous times here and it always sounds the same because until root causes are changed, we'll keep having the same discussions and frustrations. CEO's and other administrators' salary cuts would be a drop in the bucket-- Yes, it would show good faith and would be an appreciated gesture, but it's not going to solve much in the big picture. It's the BEDSIDE aspect of nursing that is going to make or break nurses (staffing appropriately, among other things) and keep them at the bedside. How many nights have I thought, "They can't pay me enough to do this job!" It's less the money for me and more the working conditions when I consider my future in nursing at the bedside.

Boy, the more I sit here and think about this the angrier I get. As Nurses we have got to have more of an impact on the health care system. The good ole boy network has got to be closed down. I have no doubt that because nursing is a predominately female profession we are not being taken seriously. What do we do?? We are some of the most intelligent people on this earth should we be taken advantage of because we are also the most compassionate?? Should we get serious and start acting instead of sitting around *****ing? If everyone searched on the internet for their Senator and Congress representative email address and start bombarding them with emails do you think they may start to listen? I've seen very little attempts to come up with a decent health care program by our government. We all know the Pharmacutical companies and the insurance companies are making a ton of money. I really believe it is because the money is being mis-appropriated. Am I talking out of my butt???

RN-PA, I agree, we should get to the root. It's time to start doing some research. Should we start with the hospital budget, health care insurance coverage, and the cost of pharmacutical products?

I would love to meet a Journalist that would be willing to start digging.

Why should we have to accept less money to have that? We should be demanding both. Nurses have to wake up, get business savvy, stop devaluing themselves, and stop being martyers. The money to pay for what we need without disrespecting us by lowering our salaries and forcing us to choose between better salary or better working conditions is there. Its just being siphoned off and going to executives salaries, perks, and pockets at the hospitals, medical insurance companies and HMOs.

Reading the numerous articles in this forum alone about the millions of $$$ that are out there being "swindled" by healthcare CEOs and drug companies, it gets very hard to believe that there is just no money to be found. Let those guys accept less money. Take some out of THEIR pockets - not ours - & put that towards patient care improvements. Theres plenty of enough money for it:

I don't mean to be a negative "Yes, BUT-ter", ~BUT~, as we've said, ad nauseum, nurses must get organized, get politically active, nation-wide in order to make changes. We can stand up and beat our chests and make demands and quit being martyrs, but the reality remains that not enough of us care enough or have the time or energy to move these "mountains" needed to change all that's wrong. Tell us what we can do-- realistically-- rather than just starting these same threads and complaining about our lot every 6 months or so.

I for one (and there are others) have spent a lot of time educating & informing people here of what they can do & how to do it. I dont think we're all just complaining. In between posting their opinions and venting their frustrations, a lot of nurses are becoming pro-active and taking action.
