Should I take it already?? Pls help!!

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

hello fellow nurses. first, i would to say that i am an avid reader of this website since i started my pn program up until now that i graduated and started reviewing for the nclex. whenever i feel like throwing up just by looking at my books i would grab my laptop, get comfortable on the couch and browse through allnurses.com to get some good vibe and hope. this website has given me nothing but good insight. and now i am facing a difficult decision.

here my story..

i graduated dec. had to take my exit exam twice since i failed the first time. took my second time exit exam jan.15 and after that i have been studying for the nclex eversince. i have judith miller video - used it to review contents, saunders 4e cd only - use it for practice questions, and our school gave us the pearson book - used the cd couple times to answer 25 items questions, i also purchased kaplan qbank (only because could not afford the whole review packet ) early on my study period which i regretted later on after realizing i had enough material on my hand already and i really didn't like after reading a question that makes you think hard and pulled all your hair off it would not give you enough information on the rationales as to why the answer was correct and not correct. i also have the lacharity book but i think i only used 2-3 chapters. i have watched judith miller video and took notes while she goes through each system and then i would use saunders cd to answer 100 items exam after. and these are my scores

from saunders content 100 items test

respiratory 64%

child health 59%

endocrine 80%

maternity 75%

delegating prioritizing 64%

musculoskeletal 66%

renal 53%

mental health 68%

cardio quiz

20 items -- 70%

(wow i guess i really didn't cover every system)

so those are my scores from watching judith miller video and answering saunders questions. i would also do 10 items quiz on saunders and i would get 60-80%.

and from 25 questions on pearson cd i would usually get 65-78%

and here are my kaplan tests scores

i have been waiting for my att since mid jan. and finally got it today. now, i have been slacking a little bit lately. i guess i got tired of studying ( i know its not nice to say that) but i would do 50 questions a day from kaplan qbank. and when i do study i study for 2-3 sometimes if im lucky 4 hrs a day. i have two kids a 2 year old ( very handful) and 7 yrs old who has a lot of extra activities after school and needs a driver all the time. my husband works two full time job a day. and a house to manage on top of all that. just this last spring break i decided to take a break, so me and my family went on for a 4 days getaway. after i got back i tried to start answering questions again on kaplan and i would get 40-58%. i felt like i'm not retaining informations from studying for 2.5 months. after my short vacation i felt like all that i've learned was gone! now, i had been getting back to studying mode and next thing i know my long awaited love letter from the board is here.

i have recently obtained a hurst review (full material) and it is a lot of material. so now i am facing a dilemma whether to take that test already or should i review some more using all the hurst material which means i would need couple weeks again since i can only study 3-4hrs a day. or maybe i can just brush on for 1 week using hurst. it took me over a month to cover most of judith miller's video.

please help me with some advice!!!! i know i only can determine if i am ready to take the test myself or not but i just can't think straight right now!!! :bluecry1:

2 people from our class took the nclex already and one of them literally only studied the whole weekend and took the test on the next monday and passed the test. they said that it's not really how much you know but how you pick the correct answer... but i think you can pick the correct answer if you know what the question is asking about. and i am not really confident that i know enough to pass this test.. that's if i really have to "know" all the details.

somebody!

thank you for reading my long story.. it felt good writing it out though :uhoh21: i feel like my chest is 1lbs = 2.2 kgs lighter...

maybe you can see on my writing that i am not an english speaker too (pls excused)... meant more pressure to me!

Go online right now and schedule your test date. The longer you wait, the harder it will be. You've invested in yourself. Don't underestimate your abilities now. Positive thoughts equal positive results.

Thank you shamrokks

You're absolutely right!! ;)

PS. 1 kg = 2.2 lbs. Not the other way around...

Great read. I'm gonna research on the said materials u mentioned above. I need some good study material for the nclex.

you see.. I am really not thinking I didn't even noticed! Thanks for correcting that!

If I were you I would focus on just 1 study material (I would choose hurst). Then if you have questions about something the hurst says or do not do well in 1 area then maybe use another source to supplement that. But if you are using a million different sources you can't actually focus on the information and retain it. The hurst review (I think) explains things very well and if you actually try to "learn" it vs "memorize" it you will do well. I still firmly believe if you have a basic understanding of the body, disease processes, and interventions you will be able to choose the right answer because you KNOW the right answer, not because you are guessing.

My advice is to schedule your test for as soon as you can take it. Get it and the stress of it behind you!
