Should I run away screaming?

Published

I recently interviewed for a part time, weekends only case management/utilization review position. I have some home health case management experience, but no utilization review experience and no hospital case management experience. After 2-6 weeks of orientation, I would be expected to function as the sole person on duty for approx. 500 patients. There are 8 people in the department during the week. The position I interviewed for is brand new, so I would potentially be the first person to occupy it. This seems like a lot for one person to handle. Does anyone have any insight as to whether the expectations for this position are resonable or should I just run away now?

Wonder what the caseload is during the week. I am aware that full-time nurses for some companies have or did have a 1000 case workload. I'm thinking 500 people for a two day weekend is alot of people to manage-even with stratification of levels that dictates how often you call or may receive a call. But, that's just me.

My experience in this field would definitely support your impulse to flight.

I got hired as UR Case Manager and I will be expected to handle 50 cases/day. I think there are 10 case managers total.

50 cases is fairly steep when you think about having to study each case, the call itself, and all the documentation you have to do for the case. I've never done weekend case management in the corporate setting so I'm only taking my best shot. You will have to ultlmately decide. For a twelve hour shift, you will have about 24 minutes for each case. For an eight hour shift, 16 minutes each case. That may be doable because some cases will require more time than others. However, this does not count breaks and etc. With the UR portion, navigating the insurance company's phone system or web system can be a pain. Again, you will have to decide if you want to give it a try. If you were hoping to work just the weekends, it may be worth a shot just to see how it goes.
