Should I retake Eng 102?

Published

I took Eng 102 in Spring and I was really embarassed to end up with a B. All of my coursework was As but I missed several days and the instructor dropped my grade. The reason that I missed the days was financial reasons. I have to drive 70 miles a day to get to school and I wasn't working. My financial aid wasn't enough and there were several days that I just didn't have the gas money. I took five classes in fall and all my other profs/teachers were very understanding and I got As in everything else.

The program I am applying to counts you GPA for all college level classes. The B really pulled my GPA down, but retaking it will mean spending more money on classes tan I planned. I think I'll visit a counsilor to discuss this, but what do you guys think? I know if I take it from the teacher I took 101 from I will get an A.

Was the attendance policy in the syllabus? If so, then I think you should have gone to the professor ahead of time to explain the situation. They can see your work and the work in your other classes to know that you aren't a slacker. Did you need to be there to participate in class discussions?

If there's nothing about attendance and grading in the syllabus, then you might have some room to ask for a review of the grade. If you come in apologetic and non-aggressive, you might be able to sway the professor.

Good luck.

Yeah the attendance policy was in the syllabus. I emailed him three times and visited him in his office twice. He definitely knew what was going on. If I had realized he was going to be that strict with attendance I would have taken a different class.

When I told my 101 teacher who I had for 102 I got a feeling that she didn't hold him in high regard. She said something like "He's okay" but her body lanuage didn't agree. She gave us a list of people teaching 102 that she liked, but I couldn't get into any of those classes.

I tend to think that strict attendance policies in college is kind of silly. I mean, if I turn in all the work on time and get As on everything, shouldn't I earn an A?

I'm actually an excellent writer with great grammar skills (although that may not show here). My 101 teacher actually wrote me a glowing recommendation for the honors program.

I agree, it's silly to have a strict attendance policy for an english class. Afterall, you could easily take it online and not have to "show up" at all. hehe Turning in writing assignments and taking tests should be all that they look at for the arts portions of AA's. I plan to take my psych's online as I don't think I need to spend the gas money to drive for them.

Sorry about your grade, wish I could think of something more helpful to say. :sniff:

Find out what your school's policy is about retaking courses, will they accept? Do they take the average (in which case you will still have a b right?) Or will they only accept if you take it there? There are some really cheap community colleges that offer distance learning. Clovis is one, my program accepts credits from there and I think a class is 150.00 or less (double check the costs) and no application fee. If thats the case I say yeah, I was an English major I understand what your saying about having a B where you could have easily gotten an A if it weren't for the teacher. Good luck

See, things like that are why I prefer online classes. Sometimes, things happen. People get sick, have family emergencies, have to stay late for work, etc. If you made As on all your coursework, I think it's ridiculous that you ended up with a B based on attendance, but I guess policy is policy.

Personally, I would not retake the course. Cumulatively, I have As in all college courses with the exception of one B (in an accounting course I took before I decided on nursing). I hate to see that lone B on my transcript amidst all the As, but it only brings my GPA down by a few hundredths of a point.

How much is this class hurting your GPA?

I guess it depends on what admission into your school's nursing program is based on. My school goes by technical GPA (for general ed courses related to the nursing major), not by overall GPA. We are also awarded points based on grades, but English is only worth 3 points for an A (2 for a B).

If you really think this B would keep you from being admitted into the program, by all means, retake the course. However, if you're just concerned about the slight damage done to your GPA, I wouldn't worry about it. :twocents:

It brought me from a 3.9 to a 3.85. The 3.9 was because I got an A- in French.

My cc lets you retake any class and they only count the highest grade. I actually thought about retaking French but decided that that would be a little much. My summer grades should bring me back up to around a 3.9 again, assuming the Macroeconomics class gets expunged from my record (I'll find out about that today).

Ok in some regard I kind of feel like you guys are my extended family. So please excuse me while I talk to you like family.

Girl Please... I know you said, you had one B but it still didn't occur to me how high your GPA. I change my vote to  No. Don't retake that class. Your fine. I wish mine was that high. I'd be gauranteed a spot in my program..

Your doing great, keep it up. :yeah:
