Should I quit my other nursing job?

Published

I'm a new nurse (5 months) working primarily in a local hospital (part-time position) and I am debating whether I should quit my other job in a nursing home (casual position).

Reasons to quit:

  1. I really like my primary job and usually can pick up full time hours there.
  2. I hate working in the nursing home. Fifty pts are too many to take care of for one nurse.
  3. If I don't quit, I'll have to work six of the eight weekend days in four weeks' period.
  4. I don't desperately need the extra $400 a week, maybe if I quit the job, I can find another side job that I actually like.

Reasons not to quit:

  1. As a new nurse, it looks better on my resume to have both hospital and nursing home experiences. This experience will be beneficial for my future education and employment.
  2. What if anything happens for my primary job or I can't pick up more hours there?
  3. I only need to work two weekend shift in a four week period to keep this casual position, why not stick out and give it more time?

I really need to decide tomorrow, any advices are greatly appreciated.

I would personally quit the job. Studies have shown that nurses who hate their job actually give worse patient care. (im not saying you are a bad nurse) Why would you stay somewhere you dont like? I dont know about your area, but around mine, many hospitals are looking for PRN nurses. I would pick one of those up if you need the extra money. Another thing is that (now im not downing nursing home nurses) many hospitals dont really care if you worked at a nursing home, simply because the common thought is that nursing homes pass meds and change dependz. If you are looking for future education, I would pick a hospital because schools like to see ICU exp or some other high acuity area.

I agree with leaving the job you don't like-prob plenty of work avail in the hosp to work extra...and then you get overtime!

I don't see how working at a nursing home in addition to the hospital would look any better on your resume. It might look like you weren't really loyal to any one place. I'd definately quit, esp if you hate it. You don't want to get burned out. Give all your heart to the one job you like better and that way you'll be in a great postion for overtime and opportunities that come your way from the hospital!

The nursing home job won't do that much for you in terms of resume. Quit and find something else or start letting it be known at the part time hospital job that you are very much wanting a full time gig. As an internal applicant you should be able to find something full time.
