Hi all. I currently work in neuro ICU. I'm contemplating applying for a job in L&D. I think it's something I'd love. honestly it was my dream job while I was in nursing school. I ended up in neuro because of someone I knew.. Not what I wanted in a career. I love ICU.. Don't get me wrong. But I feel I would be very happy in L&D. I need someone to tell me go for it! Or stay put? Thanks for your help!

What would be your reasoning for staying in ICU?

Go for it! L&D is a very different type of nursing, and if it's something you wanted in the beginning then I'm sure you will love it now.

Why don't you ask if you can shadow an L&D nurse? Then you can make a final decision :)

Shadowing is a great idea. You have to think about what you want in the long-term. You have gained some very marketable skills in Neuro and ICU that can transfer to about any other department of nursing. Once you get into L&D, you are going to gain a whole new skill set, but you will likely lose your others if you are not practicing it for awhile. Ultimately, it is your decision, but you should take these things into consideration. Best of luck to you!
