Should I get my LVN first?

Hi Nurse Beth,

Should I go the route of LVN (private with 35k loan) and bridge to RN, or just go RN through ADN and take a 2 year to get my BSN, really trying to be able to cut costs and not end up with debt out of nursing school while still trying to be an RN at the end of it all.

Dear Should I Bridge?

My advice is go straight for your RN. ADN to BSN will get you where you want to be with minimal debt. If you land a job when you graduate with your ADN, there's a good chance your employer may help with tuition assistance to pursue your BSN.

The advantage to the LVN route is when someone needs to get out in the working world as soon as possible and start making money. In the end, though, it's only a few months to one year sooner that going for your ADN. The disadvantage of getting your LVN is it will be harder to get a job in acute care- there are  fewer options.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
