Should I get into the business or not?

hello! i am a newbie. i am considering applying for a job as case manager in a large well known institution. i have been an nurse supervisor for 6 years and am ready to be done with it. i have done some legal nurse consulting on the side and love it but need the benefit of insurance.

should i take the plug. what is the job like? it will be for medical surigal cases and i have not idea wht to expect. thanks for any advice in advance...

Are you meaning your like a discharge planner? I know for some institutions they have case managers who coordinate referrals, DR visits and both in and outpatient care across the health care spectrum of services.

I am a UR nurse for an insurance company. I speak to hospital case managers all the time on the phone and I have worked with nurses who were case managers in the hospital. Being a hospital case manager usually involves discharge planning, arranging home healthcare or transfer to a SNF or rehab facility and calling insurance companys and giving them clinical information to certify the medical necessity of hospitalization. Do you know what they are looking for to get a job like this in the hospital?

The ideal candidate would have a varied background of UR, CM, acute care and home health. They will probably take someone with several years of med-surg background. I know of one nurse who got a CM position right out of nursing school but that is extremely rare.
