Hey everyone, I'm in my second semester of an ADN program, and I am in the verge of failing. I've been analyzing my self lately, and have been debating weather nursing is truly for me. I do enjoy going to lectures and learning everything about the pathophysiology of diseases, but I drag when it comes to learning any skills. I do not get excited when I get the opportunity of doing an IV at the hospital, NG tube, ect. I also don't like the fast-paced environment.
I have considered following my goal of becoming a Family Nurse practitioner or a Psychiatric nurse practitioner eventually in the future, or whether to switch majors to Psychology or Neuroscience; and perhaps becoming a college professor(which was my first goal before nursing) I really enjoy learning about the brain, disorders, research, ect. Anyhow, I had been have been having mixed feelings about nursing ever since I started my first semester. I managed to continue, but still dislike the whole "skills" portion. What's worst is that if I fail and still continue to follow nursing, I would have to go through the entire stressful semester(s) again, when instead I would be much "happier" being in psych/neuro major. However, I know that nursing has a better pay, and offers a lot of opportunities.

Only you can decide if nursing is or isn't for you, and it sounds like you have made a decision. However, most nursing students, myself included, get excited to learn and practice new skills, so your lack of enthusiasm speaks volumes.
I didn't pass a clinical portion in my first year and was force to repeat the entire year. I was a few weeks away from finishing the first year of a BSN program when crap happened. I was devastated. But now here I am. I will be graduating in less than thirty days with a 3.7+ gpa. Yes, it was very difficult, having to return and swallow my pride. But I am not the first nor will I be the last.
Good luck.

You sound like me.
Listen to your heart. If I could do it all over again I'd go and become an EMT then apply to PA school.
Nursing can become task oriented at times and I strongly dislike that. I love when I get to use my brain beyond doing a bunch of skills. The skills part is the least appealing to me (with the exception of NG tubes).
I especially hate being stretched in a million directions.
Oh Mrs. Jane wants a shower ... oh look Mrs. Janes IV came out ... time to start another one ... and at the same exact time Mr.Dunsforth decides the he FINALLY wants to go for a walk
Oh then the charge RN comes to you and guess what? You're getting an admit. Yipeeee admission questions and more costumer service oriented pitch lines.
Then you have the patient mandating a discharge by said hour. NO ... NO Mr. Larry I will discharge when I get a breathing chance... This is NOT a hotel.
Rant over.

Sounds like you already know your answer.. your just looking for permission to do so. Nursing is something you have to be in whole heartedly.. it doesn't get better from here it gets harder and more stressful. Nursing is not your dream.. and that ok. Go out there and follow your heart.
