Shaving heads to support cancer patients

Do any of you know of a organization that raises money by shaving heads to support cancer patients? I am looking on the lines of this:

I'm in North Carolina and can't find anything local.

My mom was recently diagnosed with cancer, had surgery and just had her first round of chemo yesterday (She's getting Taxol and Carbo). For women, losing their hair is the hardest part of chemo and I'd like to do this to support my mom.

I work for a cancer center and have donated my hair to Locks of Love. But I have a few inches left after the cut. Took 3 years to grow to 12inches again, and about to cut again.

But never seen a shaving group. Let me know if you find one.

British Columbia has a program called Cops for Cancer

The Canadian Cancer Society's Cops for Cancer is a partnership between the Canadian Cancer Society and police officers, RCMP and local military police from across British Columbia. Each fall, Canadian law enforcement personnel cycle a pre-designated route in their region, raising funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research and programs that support kids with cancer, such as Camp Goodtimes. Cops for Cancer began in Edmonton in 1994 and has grown to include many other Canadian cities and areas. In British Columbia, there are four Cops for Cancer Tours, including Vancouver Island, Greater Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, and in the North."

My sister is am elementary school teacher and her school challenged the students to raise money and if they hit a certain goal my sister would have her head shaved in front of the whole school and if they met a second, larger goal, the principal would have his head shaved. Needless to say the kids were very motivated and both of them ended up with shaved heads. Some of the students even got to do the shaving!!

THAT is what I would LOVE to do. My kids school is having a Locks of Love day in March. Local haridressers will do the cutting. I wonder if I could also get people to donate money to the American Cancer Association that same day and also challenge people to shave their heads. I just feel so helpless with my mom and want to do all that I can to help her and others.

When my sister had breast cancer and had chemo and radiation she was envious of everyone with hair. She didn't like wigs so she always wore a turban. So all the women in our family and close friends decided to have "Alopecia Day" On one of my sisters better days we took her out to eat and to a movie and we all wore turbans..no one could tell who had cancer and who didn't. We had a great time and laughed alot.

OP-Call a radio station-if you're willing to do it public, maybe they could charge $5 a person to watch or something. A local radio station did that a few years back-I think they had one of the (male) DJs shave his head too-but only if they raised over $1,500-which they did.

You could get the local media involved and do a chinese raffle and/or spaghetti dinner, etc-ie make a day out of it.

Just curious-where would you expect the money to go? Maybe you could donate it to your favorite cancer charity or to the local cancer wing at a hospital.

I never thought about a radio station! What a great idea! If I had to choose one place for the money to go, I would LOVE for it to go to St. Judes. Those "infomercials" always left me crying and wanting to help, but I was never able to financially. I have two young children and I can't imagine what those parents and kids are going through. I've seen how hard this is on just my mom.

I just wanted to update everyone on what I decided. I signed up with St. Baldrick's and shaved my hair off this past Saturday. I was able to do a "virtual event". If anyone wants to see the pictures from my event, just pm me!

I didn't get the news or anything involved because I knew they would probably want my mom interviewed and I knew she wasn't comfortable with that. We ended up having a small "shave off" party at my parents house with my grandparents and a close family friend. My mom laughed more than she has in a long time.

Thanks for all the suggestions that you all gave.

BTW, I ended up raising over $810!
