I'm not from SF but I live in SF now. Craigslist is your best bet for apartments. I am amazed at the crazy amount of stuff we gotta get done before we start! I can't even register yet!

If I were to obtain a generic MSN degree from this program, can I apply to the MSN program at UCSF to become say a family nurse practitioner? I'm asking because if I were to apply to the FNP program at SFSU, I would need about 2000 hrs as an RN before I can qualify for it.

Check out the UCSF website. They do offer some post-masters appointments in some specialties on a "space available" basis. You may wish to enquire directly with them before attending State. It is too long and hard of program not to wind up where you want to when it is done.

I applied for the 08 program and yeah, they mentioned that they will send out notifications during the months of April-May. I wish they would notify us much sooner than a month before school starts.

Yes! Finally, I found a thread about this program! I'm currently applying for it right now as a backup plan in case I don't get into my first choice. I still have to write a goal statement, but I have no clue what to write about! I'm practically pulling my hair out! Can someone give me some ideas I can start with? Anything is appreciated.

Also, for the people who have applied before. Who did you put as references? professors, co-workers, supervisors? Do they have to be nursing/healthcare-related? And do they have to write recommendation letters? because on the website, it just said 3 references required, but doesn't explicitly state reference "letters." It's probably a stupid question, I know. I will probably need reference letters, but I just want to make sure.

And just some general questions:

How competitive is this program?

What exactly do you do after obtaining this degree? (the website seemed very vague on the details)

I haven't started the application process, but I saw a little. I spoke to a friend who had applied last year and she said it was a very short 3 paragraph paper and to answer the questions.

I also heard the program was very, very competitive. I think last year's average GPA was 3.9

Hi All,

I'm in the SFSU GMSN program right now. When I was applying I wish there was someone out there with some info about the program. So to answer the application process questions...

1. Yes, the program is competitive. Last year was especially bad since they accepted 10 fewer students (because of budget cuts). There are 40 students in our cohort. I can remember what the total application pool was like, but it was in the hundreds. And yes, the average GPA is high (I don't know the exact number), but I have a feeling it's not a dealbreaker.

2. Reference letters. We needed three so I'm assuming you'll need three too. I gambled and chose three people who knew me very well - even though that meant that none of them were from someone in the health field. (2 were education related and one community organizing related). But I would say that if you can get a health related one, go for that instead.

3. What they are looking for... (as far as I can tell). The cohort is really diverse. We have people with lots of health experience to people with very little. This school emphasizes cultural sensitivity and working with at-risk populations. Work that into your essays and letters if possible. If you are bilingual in any way, make sure to mention that. But keep in mind I have no idea how they chose who gets in and who doesn't...

4. How the program is run... The first day they tell you to be flexible. they really mean it. There are really good teachers and not so interesting teachers. Schedules change all the time, especially clinical placements. The summer aka semester 1 is the craziest. They throw you in the hospital in week three. It gets less hectic after that, but the material is still a lot to process. Also, in semester 2 and 3 you get thrown into classes and clinicals with the BSN students. Personally, I miss having classes with JUST my MSN cohort. Adding another group changes the group dynamics.
