Hi everyone!
Is anyone applying to San Francisco State's program for fall 2012? I haven't seen any threads on it... Just wondering since apps are due in a few weeks!
to current/past sfsu nursing students or anyone that can offer some much needed help/advice:
based on your personal experiences and feedbacks that you have heard from your fellow classmates/friends, which clinical hospitals (laguna honda, cpmc, general hospital, etc.) would you recommend for sfsu? and why? any certain professors that you would recommend for 1st semester?
in addition, how difficult was the drug calculation exam? do the practice problems they ask you to do on your own in the textbook come close to the exam questions? and mostly, do i have to write all my answers for the practice problems on paper and turn that in as an actual assignment?
also, i was wondering whether or not it's important for me to retain all the information that i have learned in anatomy and physiology class? or will the nursing classes teach you new information where you don't have to remember the detailed informations that you have learned in anatomy and physiology?
last but not the least, does the "nurse pack" contain all the clinical supplies (stethoscopes, blood pressure, hemostat, etc.) or is it a completely different set of tools? and what brand of blood pressure set would you recommend? where can i buy the supplies?
thank you guys in advance for all the help! i am really confused and lost so i'm hoping that all of your experiences can prove to be a big help! :redbeathe
in response to parkjb, most teachers are different so no use in recommendations. as far as the clinical sites, i've heard great things about most of the hospitals so it really depends on which day you want to go to clinicals on. the drug calculation exam is not bad as long as you practice. remember that you can take it again if you don't pass. i went over the entire book and did most of the problems, they get kinda repetitive. nothing needs to be turned in. i'm sure you were told to start the first 2 units but i suggest you keep going because you have to go through the entire book by the first few weeks!!
as far as anatomy and physio, if you were accepted into the program i'm sure you know enough already, no need to refresh...i didn't. the "nurse pack" does not contain steth, blood pressure set, bandage scissors, penlight, or hemostat....you can get them online. as far as the steth, most everyone bought the littman classic ii se, works perfect. any bp set works good, you can find them on amazon for cheap.
hope this helps!!
Hello!
This is a late reply, especially since you've probably already started (unless you were a spring start) but I figure this could be helpful for everyone.
I was at Laguna Honda for my Level 1 clinical and, although it is an absolutely gorgeous facility (brand new and all green!), there was next to nothing for students to do. However, it was a great place to start for people who are shy because it really forces you to talk to your patients (since you won't be passing meds or anything else basically). Oddly enough, touching people is one of the hardest things to do as a new nursing student. Plus, you'll have plenty of experience as Level 2's. So even if you do end up at LHH, it's a great first step! Each hospital has it's ups and downs but I'd say most of the people in my class were happiest at the VA or at St. Lukes. As someone else said, the clinical instructors vary every semester- the wonderful instructor I had doesn't teach at sfsu anymore- so giving out names wouldn't be helpful.
The dreaded Calc test--- RELAX! BREATHE! It is difficult but it is definitely NOT worth all the stress people put into it. In fact, I haven't missed a question yet. Read the book and ask your instructors to do practice questions with you. And definitely try to understand dimensional analysis because even though there are others ways to do the math, you can get tripped up if you arent very, very careful. For the first semester, pay attention to the chapters towards the end (I can't remember now but I think the 20's are good?). The teachers are NOT there to teach you the math. You have to ask. It's supposed to be self-taught and after level 1 they will hardly give you suggestions.
Anatomy and physiology memory will help, but it's not necessary to go back through ALL your notes. I have my notes and occasionally check back if there was something that was more clearly spelt out in those earlier classes. But that is rare.
The nurse pack only includes the supplies you'll need in your interventions class. It does NOT include a stethescope, BP cuff, etc. The school clearly lays out for you what you need to buy outside of the bookstore. The supplies can be bought anywhere that sells nursing supplies. The Littmann stethescopes seem to be a favorite.
Good luck with Level 1! And attend NSA! We're here to help you as much as possible. You can even sign up to have an upper level as your mentor! Make the most of the tools available to you and really connect with not only your cohort but the rest of the nursing students.
