Sentara's new BSN program

Published

Is anyone going to the open houses? I'm scheduled to go next week and I am eager to hear about the new requirements. I wonder how many credits we need in order to apply and what the pricing will be like?

I took Bio 100 and Math 3 in the spring, no classes over the summer. Bio 100 was lot of memorization but I loved it. I know I have the math for TCC but not for Sentara. My daughter is taking Math4 at TCC in the fall so we are doing it together online. in spring 10, I will do Clg Math, A & P II and the SDV 100 for TCC just in case I apply there. At TCC open house the woman said she recommends taking Bio 150 the Microbiology over the summer so I have been thinking about that. I have a two year plan that I have made myself, I may see if someone at Sentara has time to look it over. Since I have to wait to apply to Sentara in 2011, I have time to meet with them another time.

I will let you know after I go in this morning, what I think. I have read and read the info they posted this week so I think I have a good understanding of the process.

Taandoh,

are you saying Riverside does or does not have a waiting list?

Another question, for anyone, do you know if you have to have Bio 101 before Bio 150 at TCC, I was told since I took Bio 100 I was okay, but then it says Bio 01 or Bio101 is prereq. for Bio 150.

i attended the Sentara info session today. I am impressed with the organization of everything compared to TCC's. I think it will be a tougher route to take but def worth in the end. So you figure for a year more of perquisites you get a BSN.I understand you don't need the BSN to get a good job because if you pass the state license test you pass but after talking to a recent grad she wishes she had done the BSN instead of the diploma. Although she got a good position right away in the Sentara system she now has to go back to get her BSN and will she do it? She doesn't know, not anytime soon. So according to her she is less selection of job opportunities. What do you think about the fact that you have to take and pass to be a certified Nusing Aide before starting nursing school? A good idea I think but another step and another chunk of money!

So now I am still back to just going along with the plan of classes. I have come up with a question, that I have posted elsewhere on this forum also. I did well in the spring with Human Biology and have conflicting information on the TCC website about what to take next.

Do you have to or should I take Biology before Microbiology? If I do well in A & P I and II and then attempt Microbiology without having Biology, is that possible?

Or will I have a much better foundation with a Biology even before A & P maybe?

What do you think?

Cyn

Hi Cyn, You and I are so alike with our schooling! :) I am thinking more and more about Sentara's program because of getting my BSN right away instead of just ADN and it gives me 3 years to get there (which is a long time in kiddo years - puts my youngest in kindergarten)!

I am like you with the Microbiology course. I'm thinking that you can take Bio 100, A&P I & II and then that and be fine. I'm not planning to add another Bio course to the mix. After having those and chemistry, you have a strong science foundation.

hoping2nurse,

Which chem have you taken or are you going to take other than Clg Chem?

I haven't had any yet.

Cyn

I'm taking Chem 1 in the spring (it's a 4 hour class that has lab if you take it in Va Beach and no lab in Norfolk - weird, huh?). Then College Chem fall '10 (or Micro). What other classes are you taking? I have all my maths - Alg. I, II, Clg Alg, then Stats and gosh, I HATE math!!! I'm going to kind of appeal to get some of my other pre-reqs to count. I can't seem to find a fine arts course that Sentara will take, but that makes no sense because I have a Bachelor's of Arts degree in English from a major university, you know? I may have to appeal that....

I registered to take A P I in Norfolk, and Math 4 online this semester. The only classes I have already are ENg 111 and Psy 201 so I have a long way to go also. I have to take Clg Alg next semester though at sentara she said you maybe be able to skip clg alg and go to statistics, I don't know though.

Since all this talk about chem, i may try to take chem 1 this fall on saturdays in chesapeake. That will be quite a ride for me from Norfolk but it maybe worth it.

I looked for the fine arts at TCC yestserday also and it seems the course numbers she gave are not the same, I am not going to take fine arts or the history till the very end since you can start without them and you have until the end of nursing school to complete them.

I will take all the suggestions, ideas and advice and decide what to do. I want to take them in the best sequence but I am just confused with conflicting suggestions.

I'm going to one of the information sessions this week--I'm going to apply to the RN-BSN program for 2010/2011 (whenever it starts).

As far as maths, at TCC you have to take College Algebra before Stats or place into it. I'm going to go the route of Alg. 1, Alg 2, College Alg, then stats because I think I'll learn more and if I try to get my Master's eventually, I don't want to have to come back and take College Algebra.

My 3 year plan which depends on TCC or Sentara:

Fall '09 - Bio 100, Math 3

Spring '10 - AP I, Chem I

Summer '10 - AP 2

**from here I apply to TCC for Fall '11. If I don't get in or get put in a later cohort, I may just wait to go to Sentara for Fall '12

Fall '10 - Micro, Alg II

Spring '11 - College Alg, College Chem

Summer '11 - Stats, Principles of Pulic Speaking

Fall '11 - Fine Arts and CNA course

**then apply to Sentara for Fall '12

Let me post this and I'll make a 'plan' for you. :)

to apply for fall '11 sentara:

fall '09 - ap i, math 4, chem 1, ethics

spring '10 - ap 2, college alg (8 weeks), stats (8 weeks), psych

summer '10 - micro, public speaking

fall '10 - college chem, eng ii, sociology

you'll have to find time to take the cna course & test too.

while in school: fine arts, history

here's what you have left:

history & fine arts

ap i

ap ii

micro

chem

english i

english ii

stats

socio

public speaking

ethics

psych

i'm going to be honest, you are going to have to bust your rear end the next 4 semesters to apply for sentara's fall '11 course. it can be done if you have time to dedicate to this, or you can slow down a bit and wait for fall '12 for sentara.

at the end of the spring '10, you can apply to tcc for fall '10's admission cycle with ap i, ap ii, chem i (basic not college), math (which you have taken) so you are on track to be able to do this, but you will need to add healthcare orientation (sdv 101) to apply to tcc by the end of spring '10's courses.

does this make sense? i'm really good about making schedules and stuff so ask away if you have any questions. :)

thanks for posting that list. i already have a ba and am a licensed rn (adn), so the only classes i would need from that list are public speaking and statistitcs. i have to see, if being an rn, i can place out of the cna class...at any rate, making the fall 2011 class should be doable for me--i'll find out this week :)

You do get out of the CNA classes; there are a couple other courses to take though that I didn't post. You can find it all on the website. You have it made, girlie. The RN to BSN looks sweet there - part time to less than part time and it's about $9K!

hoping 2 nurse,

I am going to set my goals the same as you it seems, I am going to apply to TCC next year and yet continue working toward Sentara. If I get accepted I will have to see where I am at financially, I am not going to work while attending nursing school so I have to be ready.

I am planning on taking 2 courses each semester including summers, if I don't go to TCC it will be the Sept 1, 2011 deadline at Sentara for the school and then proceed from their with the CNA course and their online Nursing courses.

Right now, the only parts I haven't quite figured is the sciences. Somewhere I am going to slid in Chem 01 at TCC since I have never had any chemistry. Either this semester or next probably. Yes, and the SDV 101 just in case.

We ready do seem to be on the same path.

Meriwhen, there were quite a few RN's looking at the program when I went. They were apply that day and had all their transcripts and records. Good Luck
