Hi, I am currently a student at Old Dominion University and finishing up my prereqs. I just starting to feel out applications for nursing schools and decided that I wanted to go to Sentara(G.P.A's not high enough for ODU, NSU and TCC doesn't appeal to me, MCI costs too much). I was wondering if anybody here goes there and how is it. I just took my entrance exam and I went to open house's and it just seem like a good school even though it only offers a diploma. Hey, I'm only 20, and can always go back to school to get my BSN or even MSN.

I graduated in May of 2005 from there and it's a good program. Everyone in my class passed boards.
I will say this, if you do go there will be lots of changes. For one, it's the only program that asks for the students' input and they're constantly tweaking it. Sentara graduates have one of the best reputations around here.

Good, how was it? How long is the school week b/c I heard that it is like being in high school again. Did you get a job quickly and where at? Do you have any advice for me as of some studing habits I should start practicing?
At first you'd only be going maybe 3-4 times a week from about 8 or 9am until noon, 1, or maybe 2pm at the latest. As you get more into the program, you'll be doing more 8 hour days to get you prepared to working 8 hour shifts and because to be NLN certified they can't do more than 8 hours of teaching.
Most of my classmates got jobs while they were still in school. I took a break, but I got a job pretty quickly when I started looking. One habit I do recommend is go, go, go to study groups. Pick a person to lead all the study groups and have a study group session for everything taught in class.

This is totally off topic, but I lurk on the VA forum sometimes b/c I'm from Elizabeth City oodles of years ago - my dad was retired Navy so Norfolk was practically my second home. My mom graduated from Norview High School and my grandmother was raised in South Norfolk in the 1920s.
My mother attended the Norfolk General school back in 1953 and lived in old Jenkins Hall, which I believe they just tore down.
Just wanted to share a bit of nostalgia from the area, and that I'm happy that old Norfolk General is still granting nursing diplomas. I thought the school was long gone by now. Also happy to hear of its good reputation. I have always thought so highly of that hospital - they gave me my dad for almost ten more years (open heart and valve replacement in 1996) and gave me my grandfather for 8 more (stroke in 1984 and he wasn't expected to live, but he did - until 1992). My mom had surgery on her neck there in 1981. No problems at all. I would love to move back to Norfolk and work at KD when I get out of school in December 2007.
Go for it and good luck to all of you!

I just applied to Sentaras program, I still have to take the NET. The school has a GREAT rep and provides way more hours of clinical training then all the other programs combined.

Don't forget Hampton University. They are expensive, but offer the BSN degree.
Good luck everyone!! Epona :wink2:

I've completed my pre-reqs - but now I need help with the application process. I don't really understand the order of things! I was suppose to go to the open house this weekend - but I missed the registration date as I've had a sick child in the hospital. Do I send in all of my transcripts first? Then take the placement test? Also - the webpage said that you have to take a pre-entrance drug screen - where and when is that suppose to take place? I'm afraid to send in the application until I know exactly what to do because I want get in!! I'm having an issue getting my high school transcripts that say that I've taken chemistry - does this effect admittance? Thanks for your help!!

I just applied a few months ago -- first, I sent in my application with transcripts from college (I just sent in my high school transcript for chemistry after class started, so it should not affect your admittance). Then I went into the school to take the placement test (the number is on the website to schedule testing). Once the school recieves your application, a card is sent to you with a list of what you need to do to finish the process. After being accepted and attending the registration class this summer, you will be given drug testing instructions. Good luck!
