Senior Nurses: Patient Case #2, Have You Ever Seen This?

Published

Disclaimer: by senior nurses I don't mean to single out age or even experience, rather to ask those who have experience in certain cases.

So last week I had a 18 year old lady partsl bleeder. Came in soaked in blood. Says she and her bf were having sex (she also recently lost her virginity) when she started bleeding heavily. I being one of the two resuscitation nurses see the triage nurse rush in.. in a panic. I scramble to grab equipment to line and lab patient. Patient is pale and had syncopized. Wondering how bad this lady partsl bleed really could be I fold back the sheets. I see blood soaked sheets.... ok? she's bleeding pretty bad.

We then get her into a gown and I inspect the area (wondering just how bad this vag bleed really is, as that I've seen bad vag bleeds too). Blood is literally pouring out her lady parts like when you leave a faucet slightly open and a stream is just pouring out. We overhead page the ER pediatrician stat she comes in takes one look and looks taken aback. I mean this was probably her worst vag bleed ever. Flustered she bumbles her way out the room and comes back with a make shift lady partsl plug ( a tongue blade laced with gauze) to plug up the bleeding.

We ask the girl her history etc.. She says this happened about a month ago when she lost her virginity. She didn't heed the 6 week healing period and started to have sex again.

Us not believing that simple intercourse or even rough intercourse could cause such bleeding (an artery had to be severed, this was bright red blood) asked her

if anything else was used during intercouse (she looked confused, and muttered that she didn't speak English, although she was able to converse with us fine before)

Anyway GYN came and rushed her off to the OR. I'm sure she atleast had to get a few units of blood.

What a case! ER is no joke. I won't even go into another lady partsl bleeder I had.

Oh if anyone cares to give some insight or ''solve'' the first patient case I posted lol.

Yes, lady partsl lacerations bleed profusely. Have seen a couple in my career.

Well, not to share too much, but: I had uterine cancer at a young age and with no known risk factors, and I bled like a stuck pig. I hope that isn't the case with your pt, and am interested in hearing what happened with her. (Does it frustrate you ER nurses, not knowing the disposition of pts you treated? I'm from subacute/ltc, and we have such a wonderful opportunity to learn about a pt and their lives.)
