hi there,
i am new to this selection criteria cr*p. all my other jobs have been "can you start today?!!".
i do not understand the s/c writers' sentence construction - i believe they are all drunkards.
could someone please give me an idea of examples? i have been doing ccu, ed, icu for quite a number of years plus i did drug and alcohol detox/rehab. :trout:
if i paste these things here - could someone please give me an idea of what sort of examples i would use?
oh yeh - i/v is on tues. they only told me on fri and i've got 12hr shifts all weekend.
ac1 demonstrated ability to provide quality customer focused nursing care
within an acute or primary health care environment using a problem
solving framework with an ability to make clinical decisions under
conditions of urgency or stress. i put tpca + stent - urgent case from beach.
ac2 demonstrated skills in communication; including interpretive listening;:uhoh21:
challenging situations; appropriate escalation of issues; written
communication and team work. no idea
ac3 demonstrated ability to incorporate the principles and practices of
documentation, data collection, information management and
confidentiality into the role of the registered nurse.
ac4 demonstrates the importance of evidence based practice, continuous
quality improvement and participation in continuing professional
development whilst contributing to optimum standards.
ac5 understanding of contemporary human resource practices including
workplace health and safety, employment equity and antidiscrimination.
i managed the 1st one - but these others just do not work for me. what words do i use to demonstrate the importance of something? what is interpretive listening? how do i demonstrate that i listen? how do i describe all these as a situation in the workplace?
i have been researching s/c all evening and i am nauseous with exhaustion. then i thought about you guys and i got a little feeling of joy - "there may be someone out there who can help me"
thank you so so so much
you can email me if you like. do you know my email? can i write it?
this is probably stretching our friendship - but i have found a way to attach the job info. in case anyone has nothing to do for the next 36 hrs of their life.............................
the job is for a telenursing centre.........

hi kaeri:
i'm going to warn you, i've seen this stuff all over the us and i hope that we wont have any cross cultural issues, but it seems that bureaucracy is a universal language. here's some suggestions:
ac1: i think you've got the point but also mention the length of time you've been delivering care in each environment: "two years experience on respiratory med/surg unit with frequent need to respond to critical events such as...." for quality of care (i'm doing quality engineering so this is where i can really shovel): "five years experience in the administration of medications with no errors; high patient satisfaction scores; no documentation errors; recognized by managers for promoting absolute patient safety within work group." again, show that you've done this over and over.
ac2: this is looking for examples of how you can sort things out to find the real problem. in patient care, its the patient that's dropping hints of suicide or abuse. with co-workers, its finding where people are not communicating and getting them to resolve problems as a team. examples: "as team leader, improved teamwork and cooperation with laboratory by encouraging discussion of common errors and establishing a monthly error review working session". and of course the old chestnut: "used active listening to improve patient compliance with dietary regimens." come on, the detox stuff is just loaded with opportunities to listen for the real issue.
this is also the place to talk about documenting issues and bringing them to management for review or action. this could be a practice change or an issue with a coworker. from where i sit, it could also be "how do you resolve issues with malcontent coworkers", but i'm hoping for the classier path.
ac3: this one is a case of lazy hr weenie. pretty much parrot it back:
documented health care interventions according to professional standards and in compliance with clinical policies. maintained compliance with (whatever your privacy laws are, for us it's hippa).
ac4: if you've participated in any research studies, this is where you list them. also, "gained knowledge of science based practices through professional education activities. shared this knowledge with colleagues. advocated changes to to management to obtain permission to change methods of providing . participated in chart reviews and quality improvement coaching sessions with other team members. essentially, anything that you've done to make your part of the world better/safer/healthier. most important, you should show that you can lead change, rather than resist it. being stuck in a rut is not attractive.
ac5: parrot talk. show how you are aware of proper hr practices and procedures and your laws about equality in the work place. "through education of my team, reduced absenteeism by 2 percent". "maintained a workplace that is friendly to workers of both sexes by educating staff on the differences in communications styles of the sexes, etc etc" this is what we might call "group hug" activities, if it wasn't for the concern that group hugs are no longer considered appropriate touching. also good here: activities that show a positive tilt toward encouraging the retention and advancement of new nurses.
all right, friend, translate this all in to australian and have at it. good luck in your job change.
