Second Degree Nursing

Published

I have been teaching in NY for two years now, and as many of us know the teaching jobs are few and far between. Due to budget issues, I already know that I will be getting the dreaded "pink slip" in June being low on the recently hired list.

I want to go back to school for nursing but unsure of what path to get there. I have seen many second degree programs but you need pre req's that I don't have. I am unsure if I would be able to finish the classes before the application deadlines for next year. I am wondering if it is possible or a good idea to "transfer" into a nursing program as opposed to finishing the pre req's and then applying. I am in no way stuck on staying in NY and free to move anywhere in the country. I am overwhelmed looking at programs online but I want to start moving in the right direction asap.

What are my best options??? Thanks in advance!! :)

Well even transferring will require prereqs. I started my prereqs part time January 2011 and I'm applying to one program for Fall 2012 (I am picky) and more following if I don't get in.

I don't know of a program you can transfer into and bypass prereqs. There might be programs that will let you take some of the classes that are typically prereqs after you are accepted into the program, but not sure if any accelerated second degree programs would let you do that.

From what I've looked into, it would be about the same amount of time. If you transferred into a traditional nursing program, you will probably have your humanities classes waived, but would still have to take the science courses required before you could start the nursing classes/clinicals. If you went with an Accelerated program for nursing, you will need the science pre-reqs before you even begin. In my case, it's smarter to take the pre-reqs through my local community college (much cheaper) and then go into an accelerated nursing program.

My plan was to try and finish the pre reqs this spring and summer, but my local community college doesn't offer a lot of options. I am currently taking statistics, and starting A&P I at the end of may. With my work schedule I am limited to only taking one class at a time until June. A&P I goes until July 19, but A&P II and Micro are both offered starting July 5 and would overlap times with A&P I. This would leave me with at least two outstanding classes in Sept and I would be ineligible to apply for Jan/Sept 2013.... frustrated!
