Seattle University BSN (transfer) Fall 2013

U.S.A. Washington

Published

I didn't see any thread for Seattle U BSN transfer program fall 2013. Lets see if anybody else applied other than me lol..

At SPU, Pharmacology is weaved into our theory class. We have a different professor (Dr. Kapur) teaching this part of the class and it works fantastic. I know that at SU, pharmacology is actually a whole different class and I have heard this being problematic for a couple of my friends there. Keep in mind that pharmacology is all throughout JR year and some of senior year. This is just one little bit that I like about SPU. A big thing to weigh out are the university foundations and core classes. As transfers, we have to take 2 at some point during the 2 years we are here. I'm not sure how many are required at SU. I have taken one already, and it was honestly harder than my nursing courses by far.

I didn't get into UW or WSU, and I'm pretty sure it's because of my terrible academic history, which is kind of annoying considering I was about 18-20 then. I'm 29 now...I can honestly say I'm really not even that upset about not getting into UW. I got my rejection letter earlier this week and just sort of shrugged it off and threw it away. I think it was because of their completely egregious and off-putting application process. My sister-in-law is a John's Hopkins NP grad and she said that even her application process for the NP program wasn't even that intese. She is also a clinical faculty member and on the admissions board and said it was ridiculous. Johns Hopkins is the number one medical school and nursing school in the country. Anywho, I've made the decision to stay around my local area for my RN...I just can't afford SU tuition, unless they give me some insane scholarship for the next 2 years.

I am sorry about your academic history,I am in the same boat as you. I have been rejected at WSU twice and PLU once.I too have several repeats and one withdrawl on my prereqs and my overall GPA isn't that great since I took some college courses while I was in highschool. My nursing GPA is decent now,but my academic history is the issue ..lol I am going to keep trying :) Don't give up! In my opinion and those of others, students who have been rejected, have healthcare experience and a passion for people, turn out to be the best nurses.

Congrats ladybug 031302. These schools look a lot closer at a persons entire background rather than just admitting on grades. I was actually quite pleased about that. Most other schools let students in on a point basis only where I'm from in California. They don't have essays and don't care at all about volunteer experience so I think we are quite lucky to have been able to submit that extra material.

I have quite a difference in academic showing between my first attempt at college (in the mid-90's at Portland Community College) and my second attempt (which has been from April of 2009 until current). My PCC transcript is horrible. I have many F's and D's and incompletes. I had only one class from that stint at PCC that is actually being used for my AA. I had to send in that transcript to UW SoN. They see the difference between my PCC transcript and my more recent academics. They saw my poor grades despite my recent good ones. Like lubelle says above, it's a good thing that some of the local programs aren't just looking at grades. For me, in lieu of my poor grades in the 90's, UW also saw that I had life experience after them that led me to be a more fit student the second time around. Perhaps the time in between is what makes the poor grades ok. I don't know. What I'm getting at is that you should not give up! No one is perfect and unsatisfactory experience in one area (academics) can be balanced out by time and experience in other things. I say go out on a limb and get involved in a community service project or take on a roll in a non-profit that has a focus on something you really believe in. The part of your academic history that you feel may be hurting you, could possibly be overlooked by the addition of one or two other things. Just a thought. I wish you the best with your journey!

Thanks for the encouragement, but I'm not crushed or upset LOL. It's not the end of the world if I don't get to go to UW Seattle. It actually sort of works out for the better. Honestly, I work alongside nurses from UW, SU, out of state BSN programs, and from the local community colleges. Unless someone told me they graduated from UW, I would never know the difference. They're really no better (or worse) than the ones that didn't graduate from UW. I'm not really going to waste an entire year trying to apply to UW. I just don't have the time or the desire to go through the process again. I need to get my life started and waiting around another year is just not in the cards. So, for anyone that is actually crushed about not getting into UW. Don't be. There's so many really great nursing schools out there...including community college programs, and you can always get your BSN from UW after you complete an RN program. In the end, I suppose you have to ask yourself the question, "Do I want to be a nurse, or do I just want to go to UW?" And I really just want to be a nurse at the end of the day.

Hi everyone -

I'm in the same boat as a lot of you - a pretty checkered past academic history. In the early 90's, I really mucked around in school. Two years ago, I was able to get my community college to take all of the terrible grades out of my GPA calculation, which helped me in the long run. The classes are still on my transcripts, but don't weigh into my current GPA. Thank goodness. Unfortunately, the classes are all still listed, so my transcripts do still show incomplete classwork, which I'm sure looks bad. All I know is that I've worked really, really hard to establish myself as a dependable and dedicated student in the past few years, and that's really all the control I have over the situation! :)

I was bummed that I wasn't accepted at the UW, but like some posters have mentioned, it's truly not the end of the world. Because I am an older student (38), I have decided to keep moving forward with my education. I'm meeting with advisors at both the U and SPU in the psychology department. I always said if I was able to become a nurse, psych would be my very first choice. I'm also interested in research, specifically in the field of neuropsychology. So this next school year I'll work towards a bachelor of science in psych, and apply to nursing schools this next winter. If I still don't get admitted, I'll finish my bachelors and apply to an accelerated program for nursing. I know that I want to be a nurse, and I'm not willing to let silly things like denial letters get in my way. Gotta keep moving forward if you don't want to end up at a dead stop.

Best of luck to everyone - it sounds like people have great secondary plans and I know all who want it will become amazing nurses.

Well everyone, I called admissions and they said letters are going out this week. We will not al get the the same day though because they are sending them out in waves. Good luck to everyone! The wait is almost over! :)

Sarah, I'm really interested in psych too. I ultimately want to work as a Mental Health NP or in a medically underserved community. I'm also older than many of my peers (29...) Sounds like you have a pretty awesome backup plan.

How did this SU forum turn into a UW forum????? SU is still a REALLY awesome school, it's just expensive.

lisabre--did they say what day they would start and how many waves? I was thinking about calling them tomorrow to ask questions...

@csweet no, I haven't received mine either! So disappointing. Maybe they are sending them out in waves too, or the person was

Mistaken in the earlier post? Who knows, but I mean come on... It has to be any day now!!!
