Seattle University -- APNI 2011

U.S.A. Washington

Published

I've been a reader of these message boards for some time and thought I'd finally start participating. I didn't see a thread for the SU APNI 2011 application process, so I thought that as the deadline is this week I would start a thread and see how everyone's process went. I'm interested in the primary care np track myself.

Seattle U is actually the only school I've applied to. I live in the area and am not really interested in relocating (at least not this year). I know their program is extremely competitive, so I'm beginning to formulate a back up plan (in case I'm not accepted).

I earned my BA in a (completely) different field, and after some major life experiences, I was called to work as a nurse. I've worked and volunteered in tons of different settings, but am constantly pulled to Midwifery. I have been working as a Medical Assistant at our local hospital and became a birth doula this summer.

Where else have you applied?

Hopefully Seattle U gives us some good news in 2011! Best of luck to all applicants!

Sounds like you have a lot of experience! I was trying to become a doula, but I'm also a full-time student so it was hard finding time (just finishing up BA in Anthropology and Women's Studies....also a completely different field). I was planning to go into maternal and child public health and have always been really passionate about midwifery care, but never thought I would want to be the midwife! I studied abroad in Cape Town and shadowed/assisted two midwives there and I was hooked. Now I can't imagine doing anything else. Its like every birth I went to was like a drug and I'm so impatient to get to nursing school :)

I'm from the East Coast, and cannot wait to relocate, wherever that may be. I ended up applying to both BSN/MSN and just accelerated BSN programs (mostly public schools in New England). The other combined midwifery programs I applied to were Johns Hopkins and Vanderbilt, but I think Seattle is my first choice, so here's to hoping for good news soon!

Hi every one. I have applied for the Adult/Gero track. I think the interviews will start to come in Feb. They are reviewing the applications now I guess in Jan. I live in Seattle. Wanna get in to this program so bad. I have done all the pre-reqs with As and have an Ok GRE. I hope I get good news. What is everyone thinking? I know 300-400 people apply for the 50 spots. So it's probably competitive. Any comments?

did anyone else get an email offer to chance specialties? Mine was from FNP to AGNP.... just curious.

*change specialties.....

I did get that email. They probably sent it to all FNP applicants. Did you decide to switch?

I did not get an email, but did they give any indication why they wanted people to switch?

I didn't get it either and we applied to the same specialty, Kris, so I'm going to assume that they just sent it to FNP applicants. I know that last year when they first started accepting midwifery applicants they asked people if they wanted to switch into the CNM specialty, so they may have started to offer a new specialty.

Specializes in Adult Nurse Practitioner / Gero NP.

It is my understanding that they just emailed the FNP applicants about this. The email said that they had recently changed the Gerontological NP specialization to include all adults as well, which would prepare students to practice in primary care for adults age 19 through 100+. They said as they had even more applicants to the FNP program than usual and because the AGNP specialization was not highly advertised, they were offering all APNI FNP applicants the opportunity to change there program preferance to AGNP, especially if they planned to work primarily with adult patients. I gave it a lot of thought and chose

the AGNP track to apply to because I really only have a strong interest with vulnerable adult populations. Hard decision, though! In the end, the additional focus on chronic conditions in aging patients and less peds focus was what helped make my decision to switch my application from FNP to AGNP.

Best wishes to all, and now I suppose it's waiting time until offers for interviews start coming out.

thanks for sharing, flaneur.... I still can't decide!

thanks for sharing, flaneur.... I still can't decide!

When I emailed the grad admissions dept, they put me in touch with some CON (College of Nursing) faculty who answered some questions of mine. The faculty member that I emailed back and forth with was very helpful and her responses were a major factor that helped me decide.

Anyone hear back yet? I'm getting antsy here!
